Oaxaca

We are looking for an inexpensive hotel in Oaxaca. Is January high season or low season?

While you are waiting for personal recommendations from previous visitors to Oaxaca, I suggest you use my favorite Search Engine: Google

http://www.google.com

type in your search word(s):

oaxaca budget hotels

You'll get back several websites that include these categories.

P.S. January is the high season; i.e., more expensive.

People to to Mexico destinations to escape the cold winter months of December, January, and February.
In a place like Oaxaca, "high season" is not really a season, but when the various festivals such as Day of the Dead, Day of the Radishes (December 23), and the Gulaguetza--I'm sure that's not spelled right, but it's some kind of harvest festival in July--are. So I don't think there is a mark-up on prices in January.

There are lots of Internet sites with Oaxaca hotels, and lots of small hotels in the $30-$70 range. We enjoyed our stay at a B&B called Las Bugambilias--they have a website, but I don't remember the url. Our room was $70 and included breakfast. It's a family run place with about 6 or 7 rooms, and there is a full-service restaurant called La Olla in the front of the property that is excellent and inexpensive. Be sure to find somewhere in the historic central district because Oaxaca is very walkable. Las Golandrinas is another place I have seen recommended, but I haven't stayed there myself.

My mom and I stayed at Las Golondrinas during Holy Week in April this year. I really liked the hotel, but some of the guests were very noisy. They'd be up until around 3 a.m. I guess what I'm trying to say is if it's not a busy time of year, I'd stay there again.

Hi- January is one of the "high seasons". It is pretty busy right from El Dia de los muertos in November, to el Noche de los Rabbanos, through Christmas, Epiphany etc. About January 10th things will slow down a lot. If you can find a room and and airfare, however this is a really good time to go. The Hotel Marques del Valle is right on the Zocalo, also Hotel Mission de los Angeles is nice, but a bout a half hour walk from the Zocalo. Both of these places are expensive $90.00 a night this time of year. If you want to save money there are a lot of places that tourists generally don't stay at that are nice and realitiveley inexpensive like Hotel Meson de los Angeles and many other non- tourist places downtown. In this seadon hotels generally add $5.00-$10.00 per night. if you want to stay really cheap contact a langauge school and stay with a family. I paid $14.00 for a room and three meals a day last year.Good luck

Hello Jackie,

I agree with the posting about the Bugambilias. My husband & I have been to Oaxaca about eight times and The Bug. is our favorite place. We had a room (The Violeta) that was about $40 a night. The bathroom was not in our room but was just a room over, and it was a master bathroom for only us. They actually gave us a key. I enjoyed this very much because it was as roomy as my bathroom at home. Our room also had a very nice porch off to the side. Claudia and Renee (co-owners) are very nice and speak great english. They have a website with pictures - try a search.

Also, since I don't like to get dressed first thing in the morning, my husband would go down to the kitchen in the morning and they would prepare a tray of coffee he could bring up to our room. It was great sitting on the porch enjoying our coffee every morning!

We have also stayed at the Camino Real which was very pricey and the atmosphere was not nearly as friendly as The Bug. They also tried to charge us for several meals we did not have, and we were not sure we really did eat/drink all the stuff we were charged for from our mini-bar.

We have also stayed at the Valle and the Antiquerra which are both nice. Whatever place you decide on - I would strongly recommend making a reservation.

Have fun - Oaxaca is our favorite place in Mexico! LisaJ
