Moving to Guanajuato

Hi everyone! My family and I are going to spend 6 months in Guanajuato (city). We are thinking of making is our home, but want to scope it out first. I have been searching non stop for affordable long term rentals that appeal to us, but sheesh - it is tough. Are there any friendly expats here who could direct me? I have checked everything from local newspapers to online listings. Are we better off searching in person? We get there june 15.

thanks so much for your insight

Stew? Maybe he'd be willing to give up his place
Generally, you're better off having "boots on the ground" when looking for longer term rentals. Too many variables in renting sight unseen that could potentially turn into a nightmare. But hey, that's part of the experience too. Have fun!

I've yet to get to Guanajuato (lucky you! I'm envious!!)

but from time spent and observing how things work in Puerto Vallarta I think yes you will be better off searching in person.

Do your research in advance like you are doing now, take that along, then expand your search after you arrive. Maybe rent a centrally located hotel for a couple weeks first? Hotel staff actually can be a great source of information.

Then word of mouth, walking the neighborhoods, looking at signs. The people I know in PV with Mexican style apartments (local not tourist prices) found them thru someone's brother's 2nd cousin's wife suze

You might start at http://gtolist.com/forum/ A local Expat site.
Also if you contact me I can give you some leads.
I paid 5000 peso per month for a small 2 bedroom apartment, Pullman style kitchen, tiny bathroom, but a great glass enclosed patio with a terrific view. Included Utilities, WiFi & cable this past season. The only downer was the 94 steps up from the street.
The year before I paid 3,500 plus utilities for a large one bedroom with a washer/dryer & well equipped kitchen, so rents are going up as the peso weakens.
Both units were in excellent areas.
I looked at a lovely furnished 3 bedroom house with a attached one bedroom "mother-in law" unit for sale at 1,970,000 pesos in a great area or about $110,000 US so if interested buying prices are good.
As others have said you really need to be on site before committing for a long term lease. I am fortunate as local friends I trust checked out my rentals for me.
