Help With 20-day Itinerary: Mexico City + Surrounding Areas (Jan)

Jump to last reply

Hello Everyone, I've looked through other posts, and thought I'd try asking specific questions to all of you to help with planning. My husband and I booked our flights to Mexico City on Dec.27 and flying back out Jan.15 for a total of 20 days. Our first 9 nights are in Cayoacan and we cannot get out that reservation, and then have nothing set after that. We booked these details months ago when we got married, but have not had the chance to plan our honeymoon trip until now. This is our first time in the country and our Spanish is very very limited. We enjoy cultural sights history and nature. We are not fancy and can enjoy the simple things as we are on a tight budget and are looking forward to a laid back travel experience, rather trying to fit too many things in.

We're planning to explore Cayoacan for the first few days, then work our way to other parts of Mexico City to round out our first week. We were then thinking of taking a bus trip somewhere not too far away or a plane trip (Maybe Merida-->Chichen Itza or Palenque-->San Cristobal) and then work our way back to Mexico City by bus to fly home, but we were also considering just sticking to Mexico City and taking day trips or overnight trips.

Here are some questions I hope all of you experienced travelers can help us with:
* What are some recommendations for exploring DF beyond Cayoacan for the first week since we are 20-mins from the subway? What are some safety tips?
* Any recommendations on what to do for our remaining week and a half?
* Would you recommend simply staying in Mexico City and just move closer to the main areas after our first week and still have plenty to do for the rest of our trip in DF?
* Are there surrounding cities closer to DF that we could bus hop too?
* Any general tips for us?

Thank you in advance!
