With only 3 days, I'd probably spend my time exploring Antigua. We really liked the city. Shopping was great in Antigua, also lots of nice little courtyard type restaurants. We did the Elizabeth Bell walking tour and really enjoyed it.

I know that some people will do day trips to Chichicastenango, but that would be a lot of time spent in the car.

Another possibility is climbing Pacaya, the volcano. We didn't do that, and wish that we had, although it seems as though it could be a tough climb!

I have heard that the music museum a short drive from Antigua is very interesting with all sorts of ancient instruments. Since I had only one day to explore I spent my time looking around and did not venture outside the city.

I am really glad to have gone on the Pacaya hike, but it's not for sissies. The soles of my shoes melted in spots from walking that close to the lava - yikes! I also enjoyed walking up to the cross (with police escort), visiting the textile museum and many of the ruins. Be sure to leave time to sit in the square by the fountain and people watch. A good 1st stop is the Inguat office - great walking maps and helpful bilingual individuals who can help you sort out your interests. My photos and travelogues are here if you're interested:

Happy trails!
