Antigua Guatemala
My wife and I will be spending a month in Antigua beginning last two weeks of Feb. We are seniors and speak the language. We are currently looking for suggestions as to any advice about the city, and any suggestions regarding out trips.
Additionally would like any advice for must see in Guatemala City.

The textile museum in Gua City is wonderful if you are interested in weavings. Otherwise I would skip the city and head for Lake Atitlan. Elizabeth Bell's walking tour of Antigua would be great one of your first days there. You will get a wonderful overview of th history, art, architecture as well as the contemporary political and economic life of Antigua. You might like to tour a coffee plantation. She can arrange safe shuttle transportation to Panajachel and the market at Chichicastenango. Antigua is lovely but 2 weeks there without branching out might be a little long. Juat IMHO

Must sees in Guatemala City for anyone interested in Mayan history would include the National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology and the Popol Vuh Archaeological Museum. The city itself is not terribly charming.
There are day trips and regular shuttles from Guatemala City and Antigua to Copan Honduras if you are interested in seeing a major Mayan site. However, I would strongly recommend staying for a few nights or at least overnight.

Visit the local food market, on the edge of town and near the bus station. This is wonderful -- ask people before taking pictures, be prepared to give them a "propina" but it will be worth it! They are warm and engaging - smile and it will be returned. Explore all the buildings in this maze of color and culture. (Not to be confused with a handicraft/tourist market which is also nice)Yes, the people can be somewhat anxious to sell you things on the street, "no gracias" is all one needs to say.. This is one of my favorite places. Enjoy!
