Guatemala and Copan

I am considering going to Guatemala in August with some friends and my niece. When I was in Honduras I really had wanted to go to Copan but we really didn't have enough time. Would it make since to try to go there while in Guatemala? Would it be easier to fly into San Pedro Sula and out of Guatemala City or the reverse? We will only be there about six nights if it all works out, I am just in the beginning planning stages now.. what does everyone think? Save it for another time? Thanks

Copán is lovely (heading back there for a few weeks this summer) but it doesn't make sense to me to spend days on a Copán trip that would be mainly traveling when there's so much to see and do in Guatemala and your time is short. It's about 6 hours each way by bus from Antigua, I think. You'd save some time by flying into SAP and out of GUA - 3 hours to Copán from GUA - but not the greatest use of time imo.

Six days in Guatemala you can take in Antigua for a few nights, the lake for a few nights, then fly to Tikal and back. We timed our flights last summer so we could fly into GUA from Flores 2-3 hours ahead of our flight home.

Keep us posted!

Hopeful,
Thanks for your quick reply. I had a feeling that it just wouldn't be worth it for this trip. Hoping to organize something for Aug. before my neice heads back to school. Once I figure out my details I will be back with more questions. I have already been to Tikal, we took a day trip from Belize. Not sure if it will be on our list but maybe it's something that my neice would really love.

It can be done, but it would require a lot of time on the bus. If you fly to SAP, you can take the Hedman Alas (sp?) bus to Copan (we did, and it was cheap and very nice). There are then shuttles that run from Copan to Antigua (or based on your level of experience and comfort, local buses, but the shuttle would be quicker).

Thanks Thit_cho
I don't think that we will want to spend that much time traveling around.. maybe if we had more time. I am hoping this trip works out for August.I am not sure if everyone is on board for a Summer trip so it may have to wait.
