I went to Puerto Vallarta Thankgiving of 1999 and had a great time. Ithink you can rent a car at the airport. Get on the road at the airport and go thru town to "Old Town". It is the most beautiful. The old hotels along the beach are very very good. Sorry I can't remember the names but there are some good ones there. Also go to discovervallarta. com.
If you do a search for Puerto Vallarta on here you'll find an abundance of info about terrific restaurants. PV is a great little town, quaint and charming, perfect for walking, wandering, browsing, finding out of the way places to eat - with great food and wonderful views and ambiance. There'll be cheap places to rent jeeps or VWbugs, just do some comparison shopping, and don't take the timeshare salesmen up on their offers of "free" rentals - unless you want to of course! We rented a jeep one time at the rental that's in the lobby of the Continental Plaza, can't remember the name, but it was cheap. But buses and taxi's are cheap and easy to use too. Old town is delightful, and the South of town is much more scenic and interesting than the North end, or the Marina.
My favorite restaurants include Le Bistro, El Set, Cafe De Artistes, Dacquirie Dicks, La Palapa - any more. You'll have a wonderful time.

Marie,

If you like out of the way type spots try the Tangaroa for seafood. If you are brave and you want authentic type of Mexican food try any one of the Fonda's. They are small family owned restaurants in the upstairs section of the Municipal market.
