I know there are more, but the 1st that comes to mind is "Like Water for Chocolate". There's another very sexy one from 1 or 2 years ago that was very good and it's driving me crazy cause I can't remember the name.

"Like Water for Chocolate" is pure magic. And two oldies but goodies, both directed by John Huston, are "The Night of the Iguana" and "The Treasure of the Sierra Madre." (I prefer "Iguana" over "Sierra Madre" myself.)

Other suggestions...
"Amores Perros" is excellently done, but perhaps a bit violent for some tastes. "El Mariachi" is a totally different part of Mexico from where you were (Ciudad Acuna in Coahuila near the Texas border); in this low-budget classic, you may however listening to the mariachi in the movie and seeing the street scenes. "El Norte" has scenes from Tijuana, but definitely shows a darker side. "Selena" also has one scene in Monterrey (where I went last December and am having withdrawal pains from), but mostly it's her concert with a few token cityscapes.

Where was 'Amores Perros' set then (actually and in the film)? By the way they were speaking I had the location down as South America but then I guess the bucket-loads of 'Chinga tu madre' is perhaps Central-American.

Amores Perros was definitely set in Mexico City.
There's actually another movie that I saw on the Movie Network (here in Canada) called Mexico City. It's a suspense movie, I guess - a woman and her brother arrive in the city, and then he disappears. It's pretty scary, but they stayed at a hotel on Zocalo. I don't stay in the same hotel, but I've stayed in that area, so it was fun to recognize the area.

No one has mentioned _Traffic_, for which Benicio del Toro won an Oscar as Best Supporting Actor and which also stars Michael Douglas, Catherine Zeta Jones, Don Cheadle and maybe some other good ones I'm forgetting about. Set partly in Mexico and partly in the States. Not exactly your "feel good" type of movie, but probably more realistic than about any of the others mentioned.
More romantic would be _The Old Gringo_, with Jimmy Smits, Jane Fonda & Gregory Peck, set in revolutionary Mexico and based on the book by Carlos Fuentes. Smits also played alongside many other good people in the very nice _My Family/Mi Familia_, although this is again set on both sides of the border and more gritty and realistic.
