Going to Uruguay
My wife and I are planning a trip to Uruguay.
We have heard so many positive things about this country and are considering buying real estate to settle there can anyone provide some direction for us.
Thanks

There is a lot positive to say about Uruguay, but I'd never buy property in a foreign country on a first visit. Go. Spend some time there. Ideally, rent a place rather than staying in a hotel to get a better idea of what it's like to live there. You don't get that if you stay in a hotel. See if you like it.

Jeff is obviously right, as you acknowledge, marvontherim.
Travel to Uruguay and look around. You don't say if you want urban or rural surroundings.
In Montevideo, there are two areas, called Pocitos and Carrasco, which I find nice, but that's just me and you may like other areas.
And then, you have the beaches, most notably Punta del Este, but there are others.
I have a forum friend who lives part of the year in Punta del Este, say from October to April and the rest of the year (mainly our winter) in Buenos Aires. They own property in both places.
I feel you should definitely research and check out Buenos Aires and Argentina, not only Uruguay. BA is only minutes away by plane from Montevideo.

For me, Uruguay has a good track record of stability and of doing things right that most other countries in Latin America (including Argentina) cannot match. That would be the selling point if it were me looking.
The drawback is the distance, assuming you're from the the United States. If you have family and friends that you still want or need to see fairly often, it's just a long way away.

I think Uruguay is one of the most incredible countries in Latin American and I have been living in one country or another down this way for going on 8 years.
For some pointers about Montevideo see here - http://uruguay-travel.suite101.com/a..._in_montevideo
and if you have any questions once you are there and are interested in purchasing land, head to Punta del Diablo - just beautiful and speak to Brian (a native of wisconsin) who has set up his own business, www.eldiablotranquilo.com
He'll be able to give you the lowdown and some insider tips

You guys are great.
I'm 59, retired 10 years, travel a lot and I'm in great physical shape.
Not beach people but love being by the beach, love the city and country, love wine but not nightlife people. Pretty simple generally and to interested in touresty stuff. We have been looking at Uruguay for some time now. Your information will give us a foundation to decide if Uruguay is the place for us.
Thanks to all of you for your comments
