We stayed at the Explora in February of 2006 - it was amazing. I could not recommend it more. Now that it is more resort-like, I assume it will be more posh, but with a little loss of intimacy.

I stayed at Explora in Torres del Paine, and it was amazing. The couple that ran the hotel there now run the properties in Easter Island, so I would imagine they would be fabulous. I sat next to Explora's US marketing rep on a plane a few months ago. She told me they were building a new, larger (relatively) hotel; it may already be open. But she said that she would still recommend the smaller properties they opened first.

We stayed at the O'tai in Feb 07. Great location as you can walk anyplace in town. They picked us up at the airport and arranged tours for our 3 1/2 day stay. Rooms simple, breakfast is minimal. Grounds are beautiful. We got a room without AC as it was $20.00 per night less. We asked for a fan which was more than adeqaute as it never got hot.
