You get it she asked this nearly 4 years ago, right? It's interesting this would come up now. I take Spanish lessons using skype with a teacher in Antigua who is from Pastores; her brothers and father are boot makers and we're planning to have them make a pair for my husband when we're in Guatemala this summer.

As long as this has been revived.... for the record I bought two pairs of new boots just last week. Almost all bootmakers are in Pastores, only 15-20 minutes from the Antigua bus station by chicken bus and is very easy to get to. Once there, there are several dozen boot shops/manufacturers up and down the main road and it is easy to check them all out before deciding on where to buy.

If you don't see what you want on the shelf you can generally ask about having them custom made for you at which time you can alter designs a bit, toes, heels, linings, top shape, and so on. You generally get a choice of synthetic sole and heel or, as I did, really strong leather.

One of my pairs was off the shelf and the second pair had to be custom made because I wanted a different toe shape than the bootmaker's standard (squared rather than pointy) and, while I was at it, a slightly different leather. Both are classic cowboy boots, mid-calf. One is fairly plain, the other fancier for dressup. I am completely thrilled by both pairs. They fit perfectly and look wonderful. Others who have seen them are honestly a bit surprised at that and by the high quality of both materials and workmanship.

Total cost for the two was Q625, about US$80. Would probably be worth $450-600 in the US. I bought both at Mustang Boots, about 8 doors west of the bank, and recommend them for competency, honesty, and friendliness.
