Cozumel Diving
I will be visiting Cozumel soon and need some advise.
I have never been snorkeling or diving. I thought I should dive considering it is Cozumel, but since I will be limited in depth, due to lack of certification, is it worth it or should I just go snorkeling?
And if you could recommend a company that is reputable for either of these activities I would be so greatful.
Thank you

You don't say how long your trip is, but if you are going to spend a day doing the resort course so you can try out diving, you should go ahead and get certified - it is well worth it! That being said, I recommend the following dive ops:
Living Underwater
Papa Hogs
What hotel will you be staying at?

There is NO WAY you can dive properly - having never done it before - in one day. Don't even give it a try. Diving is a very serious business. One in which many people, lacking sufficent training, get hurt or even die. In my opinion, the one day resort courses are the very best way to end up in the dead catagory!
We spend a month in Cozumel every winter. Our condo has a dive shop on premise and I watch the new divers acquire their certification. It takes a week - at least - of attentive, one-on-one training to do it with any degree of security. Just the process of gaining neutral bouancy takes some divers a very long time. I can not stress how dangerous it is to descend or ascend too quickly even at very shallow depths.
Snorkeling is a wonderful way to enjoy the underwater world in Cozumel in the time you have. If you want to dive, take a proper course and acquire the certification to do it safely.

TC,
have you ever done snuba? Is that as dangerous? Would you also recommend only trying that after adequate instruction time?
also since you have been snorkeling couold you recommend a place?
Thanks so much for the advise.

Margarete: I have not tried snuba. I have friends who did and liked it. I really can't speak to its safety. Personally, I don't think its worth the price as you will see just as much snorkeling and without the added cost or hassle. Since you have never done either snorkeling or SCUBA before, I would advise you to concentrate your efforts on doing the snorkeling well so that you can relax and enjoy the beauty. If you are struggling the entire time trying to learn the art of SCUBA or even, snuba, you'll miss all the lovely creatures you've come to see. The best way to snorkel is to find a good spot and stay put. Let the fish come to you. Slow down and look into all the cracks and crevices. You'll be surprised at what you see and others don't. One of our favorite places is Dzul Ha. Any taxi can take you there from the cruise ship pier. Enjoy.
