costa rica-transfers from airport

i am travelling to cr in may for our honeymoon, and am getting differing opinions on how much it would be to arrange for a taxi or driver to take us from the san jose airport to playa hermosa. our flight arrives at 4pm, and we dont want to fly, drive at night, or waste a day in san jose. quotes we have gotten range from 150 to 180. any info would be most greatly appreciated.
thanks
scott

I had to take a cab from Quepos to San Jose and I paid $100. so 150-$180. sounds a lot to me. Mine was a 3-3 1/2 hour ride. I speak Spanish so maybe that helped, I dont know. I would imagine your ride is more or less the same amount of time so try to do better

The only hard part about that drive is the first hour traveling through the hills surrounding the Central Valley. After that, the road is comparatively straight and in good condition (for Costa Rica!). I would still consider renting a car for the trip. You might want to have access to a car while in Playa Hermosa, which is a pretty small (but nice) place. You could then pop over to Playa del Coco for other restaurants or other fun things.

thanks for the responses. was the 100 negotiated, or quoted to you? also, does anyone else feel that the drive is not too difficult for someone who has never been to cr, it is a difficult decision whether to drive or not during the evening hours. although, if what you say is true, we would do the toughest part of the drive through the central valley during the daylight hours around 4-5pm.
we plan on having a car later in the week definately to explore the area, but planned on relaxing the first 4-5 days.

Hi Scott. I'm a firm believer of having your own car.
However, if your flight gets in at 4:00 (assuming it's on time) you'll still need to go through customs, so you may not get out of the airport until close to 5:00. As it gets dark at 6:00, you should probably not try to drive that first day. So get the driver or wait until the following morning before departing for the beach. Sorry, I can't help you with finding a driver, but hopefully someone else will post in with more info about that.
