costa rica family trip
HI a good friend would like to spend spring break in Costa rica. They have two kids, 13 and 11 years old. They would like an adventurous vacation with high quality hotels. Where to start to look? Safety is a priority as I am reading about troubles on the Nicaraguan border. She would just as well stay away from that area. Beach area would be preferred as long as it is easy access to get to tours. The Four Seasons prices are so high, I doubt they would go for that. There is a Marriott beachfront...anyone stay there? I have just started scouting for her. I realize there are different airports to fly into. What would be the best area to look for lodging?
Thanks

How long is the trip ? That will help determine how many locations ..... Arenal is a great area (volcano ) , with all kinds of activities to do besides viewing the volcano . Upscale accomodation available . Also for a first timer , who is perhaps a bit apprehensive , Manuel Antonio would be nice(lots of jungle and wildlife and beautiful beaches ) , again lots of tours around here , and of course it's a beach location . SiComoNo or Tulemar would be good . There are 2 airports Liberia and Juan Santa Maria which is close to San Jose . Liberia handles a lot of charter flights , going to the large AI's in the Guanacaste area , and some big airlines have just started there this year . If you go(friend) to arenal and MA , best to land in San Jose . There are some great resorts in the Guanacaste area , Hotel Punta Islita , and another Playa Conchal , I am not certain about the accessability of tours from here though .

We are flying into San Jose. The first night we are staying close to airport.
Lost Iguana is in Arenal
Tulermar Bungalows is in the Manuel Antonio/Quepos area
Rafiki is in the middle of nowhere, you stay in platform tents. You can take the tour outside of Manuel Antonio.
We want to elimiate too much travel but yet show the kids a variety of places in CR
