is it necessary to book private transportation from airport to hotel destination ahead of time, or are there lots of options when we arrive at liberia airport? arriving at 2pm with 2 adults and 1 child travelling. have received quotes of 150-190 USD for private travel to arenal, some ask to prepay and others say to pay cash to driver when arrive.

In the Arenal area, I'd go to Proyecto Asis animal rescue center. You can get up close to the rescued animals. We were able to feed a sloth, monkeys, etc. Kids love it there. If you have two weeks, I'd try to spend a night or two at the Peace Lodge, not sure if you can fit it into your trip, but it has beautiful waterfalls, an aviary, a butterfly house, etc. Very popular with families. The hot springs could be fun if you go in ones that aren't too hot. I'd do a guided tour of Manuel Antonio park as well - lots of wildlife there and a beautiful beach inside the park.
