Cancun and Cozumel

My wife and I are thinking about a trip to Cancun and would like to take a boat to Cozumel for a couple of days. Could someone please recommend a great place to stay in both Cancun and Cozumel? We don't need to be at the most expensive place, but we also don't mind spending the extra money to have a clean place to stay. We're looking for a place with an awesome pool and easy access to the beach. Also any suggestions for boats to Cozumel would be appreciated. Thanks

What time of year are you going? All those great looking pools are not heated and thus we have found swimming in the ocean to be much more pleasant during jan-mar. Try to stay on the isla Mujeres bay side as the beaches are calm and great for swimming. The Presidente and Fiesta Americana have very nice beaches although can't recall the pools as we did not use them.
As for cozumel we would first suggest that you reserve that for a seperate trip. The boat trip from Cancun can be a long trip if the sea is rough. We would take a bus to playa del carmen and than the water taxi to the island.
A better two day side trip might be Isla Mujeres which is easily accessible from Cancun being only 10 miles away.
We spend a month a year in the area and keep up a twenty page brouchure that we e-mail out on request. It mostly talks about Isla Mujeres but we also cover all major points on the Mayan Riviera Dan and Ginny

Thanks for the information. We plan to travel in February. We have been to Hawaii and Grand Cayman and are looking to try a new destination. We would appreciate any information that you could provide. Separate trips to Cancun and Cozumel makes sense when you consider a long and possibly rough boat ride that would definately not sit well with my wife!! Could you please e-mail your brochure at your convenience. Thank you in advance for your help.

I don't even know if there are boats from Cancun to Cozumel. I've always gone via Playa del Carmen. PDC is about an hour south of Cancun by bus. Buses run very frequently. The ferry is about an hour between PDC and Cozumel. The ferry (I definitely wouldn't call it a water taxi) can be rough, but I've done it several times and most of the time, it's been fine. I would think that a 2 day trip would be feasible, although kind of rushed, which you may not want to feel when you're on holiday. How long will be you be down there? Last time around we went for a week (this was a couple of years ago) and spent 4 nights in Cozumel and 3 in Playa del Carmen. That seemed liked a good split for us.

Hi Mike,

I do not know of any passenger ferry other than the one from Playa del Carmen to Coz. There is a ferry hauling freight, etc. from Puerto Morelos to Coz, but you do not want that one. I would recommend staying in Playa del Carmen and just take a day trip to Coz. The beaches aren't that great nor the ruins. Good shopping and diving. If you want more seclusion stay further south in the Akumal/Tankah/Tulum. You can visit these web sites for some info about weather, villa, places of interest.

Casa Tropical Tankah... Romantic, beachfront villa, with 2 guests quarters, located on privately owned,1/2 acre, Tankah, Mexico, a 1 hour drive south of Cancun airport, 3 miles north of the Tulum ruins, with other major archeological sites within driving distance. Great views with barrier reef just offshore, and a cenote up the beach for diving, snorkeling or swimming, jungle style. Pictures, general info at web site below.

http://CasaTropical.com (summer/fall specials listed here)

Weather http://www.wunderground.com/global/stations/76590.html

Weather Base
http://www.weatherbase.com/weather/w...=509567&refer=

Bookstore & recommended reading about Maya culture and archaeological sites
http://sites.netscape.net/tankah3g/almalibrelibros

Hidden Worlds snorkel & dive tours of cenotes
http://hiddenworlds.com.mx/

Aktun Chen
www.aktunchen.com

Maps of Riviera Maya Can-do Maps
http://WWW.cancunmap.com/

Check out this web site for tours lead by the Friends of Sian Ka'an group. Very informative tours lead by a very worthwhile organization.
Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve
http://www.cancun.com/siankaan/
We have 6 of us going to Cozumel in November and rented a home. We are flying into Cancun on Nov 17 - all at different times. I am coming in at 9pm. I had heard there are cabs and buses galore to take you to Cozumel and it was about a 45 minute ride. Is this wrong? How do you suggest I get there or find out how to get there? Any suggestions on how to get from point a to b? HELP! Thanks

Stacey,
You will need to go from the airport in Cancun to Playa Del Carmen. Yes, it will take apx. 45 minutes for the ride.
Taxis will be pricey. Expect to pay $60 or so. Buses are cheaper, but the bus service just recently started so you need to find a bus schedule to see if they would still be running after 9:00pm when you get in. You'll also need to check the Ferry schedule over to Cozumel, because I don't think the ferry runs that late at night (though I could be wrong). So, you may need to spend the first night in Playa Del Carmen and take the ferry over the next morning. Better start using your favorite search engine and type in Cozumel/Playa Ferry Schedule and Cancun/Playa Del Carmen Bus Schedule. Of course, the best thing to do would be to fly directly info Cozumel! Good luck and have fun.

The last bus ($65 pesos per person) leaves the Cancun terminal at 7:30 p.m., so you will have to get a shuttle down to Playa (about the $60 quoted above). The last ferry to Cozumel leaves at 11 p.m.

I am a TA, I would say, stay in Playa del carmen and take a day (bus) trip to cancun, and a ferry (day) trip to Cozumel, you would not have to pack up and move, an I love Playcar, and so do my clients, and you could get a package which should be cheaper...
