I'm planning a trip to Mexico and will ride the bus going to Belize and to Guatemala. I just need recommendations of best places to see in Belize and Guatemala (i don't want it to be a tourist hotspots) Will probably be there for 3-4 weeks.. In addition, please add on cheapest hotels, hostels that you guys recommend.

keep your wits about you on the buses
watch out for locals befriending you
especially sneaky little old ladies
wanting to share cabs... good way to get robbed
or worse...

You need to realize that the tourist hotspots are like that because they're amazing. Depending on when you travel you won't run into problems with too many tourists most places in Belize and Guatemala. We've visited both countries over and over and have loved everyplace we've stayed and everything we've done. My photos, blogs, and travelogues are below. Come back to us with your travel time and your priorities - ruins, caving, hiking, diving, snorkeling, markets, culture, shopping, ziplining? - and we can help you more. Happy trails!

Our favorite thing in Belize was snorkeling at Hol Chan, really amazing, and in Guatemala, Tikal is really impressive. The San Ignacio area is convenient for visiting a lot of the ruins and doing caving activities, not sure if that's too touristy for you. We love Ambergris for all the hotel and restaurant choices, but again, it might be too touristy for you. Caye Caulker is also popular.
