1st visit to Panama; where to look at real estate for retirement
Planning a 1st trip to Panama for March 09. Basically this will be a vacation but we will be considering buying something if we like it. Can anyone give me any insight on what areas to begin researching? We are looking to be near beautiful beaches & ocean for diving, swimming, fishing. Need a nice sized town with restaurants, shops. Within a couple hours drive of Panama City. We are not looking for isolation; need some activity & civilization.
I have been looking at lots of real estate sights but so many of them are just selling their development that the info is one-sided.
What really are the best areas to consider living in Panama?

Has the best information on the different areas.Have been preparing lookingon and off for years.Lots of different options.Excellent government retirement packages discounts for pensionados.
For me due to the economy the market is a little soft and dodgy
right now.Might be wise to lease in an area before you buy.Look around
for a while and find a good deal you
really like.

My better advice for u is Coronado at 50 minutes from the city,in the entrance of this place there is a little mall shop with a big supermarket called Rey,if u want to see people,u only have to drive to the city,if u getting boring to see people, just back in less than 1 hour to your home(population in Panama City is 1.3 million)
Hope help u!

Thanks for the info. Any info on Portobelo? Is that an up and coming area....I'm reading mixed reviews about safety, etc. Sounds like there is not alot of development in that area yet as far as tourism goes....

Hi everybody!
Portobelo have the nicest beaches landscapes in the Atlantic side.
I went the last week with a couple from Canada,we spent 3 hours and half to reach this place from Panama City,i met a lot of americans, french and canadians there, must of them are owners of yatch, sail boats, etc.
It is worth if you have boats, but i not recommend this place,to fulfill your requirements is better the Pacific side.

I'm surprised to read that someone would consider buying property on a first trip to a country they have not visited and don't know much about.
Wouldn't you want to rent first? Spend a couple seasons in different areas? So you'd have an idea what you're getting into before moving somewhere permanently?
