zugspitze in October

Hello. We are a family of 5 (adults) traveling from Venice to Munich. Thinking to take the train from Venice to Mittenwald- spending night in Mittenwald and doing trip to Zugspitze. Taking a train from Mittenwald to Munich. Is there transportation from Mittenwald to Zugspitze? or should we just take a train or plane all the way to Munich and rent a car to Zugspitze? Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Yes, you can get to Zugspitze from Mittenwald, via Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

It's 21-26 minutes from Mittenwald to Garmisch and trains run almost twice an hour in the morning and then hourly through the day. It will probably take you longer to get to the train from your hotel than the trip between them.

The fare is 8.80 Euros, return.

hi Loribasecke,

You can take a train or a bus from Mittenwald to Garmisch. The bus takes about 10 minutes longer than the train, but I prefer it -- I like the way it winds its way through neighborhoods along the way.

Both the train and the bus schedules will come up with the DB scheduler.

This is what I always recommend for this excursion:

At the Garmisch train station, take the stairs down to the tunnel and follow the signs for the Zugspitzbahn (Zugspitze train). Take the train to the platt (where the glacier is), 90 minutes, and walk around. Then take the cable car the rest of the way to the summit (10 minutes) and walk around, have a bite to eat.

Then take the cable car all the way down to the Eibsee (about 15 minutes), enjoying the stupendous views over the lake. At the bottom, walk around the lake (90 minutes), then have coffee & cake at the lakeside restaurant. When you're ready, take the Eibsee bus back to Garmisch and get off at the Marienplatz stop (20 minutes).

From Marienplatz, walk down the pedestrian zone through town, enjoying the frescoed buildings, the shops, the cafes, and the folks on the street. At the end of the pedestrian zone, continue on to the train station and get the train back to Munich.

This itinerary will give you the big mountain, some countryside, and some town views -- a nice mix of Bavaria.

Have fun as you plan!

Thank you very much for the information. another question is our train gets into Mittenward 13.50. Will we have enough time to take our luggage to the hotel and still get to Zugspitze? Or is there a place to store out luggage around the Zugsmpitze area? Also, I read that the cable car between the summit and Eibsee is under maintenance Oct. 26-29. And that is the exact time we are planning on being there. Is it still worth going to and is there an alternate route to see the views? Also, are there any recommendations for hotels or inns to stay? We are just really wanting to see the mountain and views, but are not sure where to stay in our time frame. We fly out of Munich early Oct. 29, and so would like spend at least one day (Wed) in Munich. Thank you all again for any advice you can give.

Hi again,

Oh gosh, no. I'm sorry, but I don't think you'll have time to get to Zugspitze:

The first problem is the weather. You need to have clear skies for the ascent, or you'll spend a lot of time & money to go stand inside a cloud. Even if it's clear when you start out, it can get cloudy quickly as you travel up the mountain. We normally have clear mornings, with clouds rolling in during the afternoon & evening. For that reason, I think it's best to do the Zugspitze first thing on a sunny day. I think the chances of having clear skies at the end of the day are worse than earlier.

At best, it'll be 16.00 by the time you get to the Zugspitze. Say you get to the hotel, check in, throw your bags in the room, and get to the train station in 30 minutes. Then 30 minutes for the train or bus from Mittenwald to Garmisch. Then 90 minutes for the train from Garmisch to the Zugspitzplatt, and you're just about at 16.00. It's getting dark now around 18.00 or 18.30, so you don't have a lot of time to enjoy the views.

Yes, there are luggage lockers at the train station in Garmisch, but you'll be passing Mittenwald as you travel from Venice to the Zugspitze, so I don't know what benefit that will be. You could just as easily stash your suitcases in a locker at Mittenwald and head directly to the Zugspitze, saving maybe an hour. Then at the end of the day, you could go back to M'wald, pick up your bags, go to the hotel, and check in.

Too bad about the cable car to the Eibsee -- it's a gorgeous scene!

You could also consider staying in Garmisch and either do the Zugspitze in the afternoon you arrive, if it is clear, or head over to Mittenwald for the afternoon and evening and try the Zugspitze again the next morning.

You are going to have to leave Venice on the same train as you have planned for going to Mittenwald - it arrives in Garmisch at 14:00 after a change in Innsbruck. That is still tight for a trip to Mittenwald unless your hotel in GP is near the station. You could check in quickly and head right back out to be in Mittenwald by about 15:00 maybe, leaving you the afternoon and evening to enjoy there ( 21 minute trip time return trains leave for Garmisch at 36 minutes past the hour throughout the evening right up until the last one at 23:36), setting you up for the Zugspitze the next morning, as early as you can stand it.

Thank you so much for the information. Very very helpful. We are arriving in Venice late Sunday afternoon...will we have time that evening and most of the next day to tour Venice, if we decide to take the 15:00 train on Monday to Mittenwald and do the Zugspitze on Tuesday and go to Munich late Tuesday? Will then have all day Wednesday in Munich.
Right now I have reservations in Venice for Sunday and Monday evening, but I can change that. No reservations in Mittenwald or Munich yet, so any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you all again!!!

Just an FYI, you can do the Karwendelbahn cable car right in Mittenwald for half the cost of the Zugspitze. No, it's not as good as the Zugspitze, just a very good and cheaper alternative.

Hi again,

Unfortunately, I'm not comfortable giving out that type of recommendations -- how many days/nights for each place. If I suggested you do "x" and then you got rained out, I would feel guilty.

And I normally stay at least 4 nights in a new destination!

But really -- Venice is great, Mittenwald is great, Garmisch is great . . . how can you lose? Whatever you decide will be a good choice.

I would do Garmisch Partenkirchen. The gorge is also beautiful and cost very little to do. It is by the Olympic ski jump.

You can even do it at night.
