Wine tour or extra day in Florence??

I am trying to decide between spending a day (or most of a day) on a vineyard tour in Jan. 09 or instead spending the day in Florence, itself. My hesitation with the vineyard tour is the time of year. It seems that one of the highlights of this kind of tour is to get out and see some of the incredible countryside but I am wondering what there will be to see in January? I would really appreciate any input/insight anyone has into what this region is like in early January. Second, if given the choice would you spend most of a limited stay in Florence on this kind of tour? Or instead spend the day exploring Florence (I will have limited time in Florence)? It's so hard to choose between so many great options! Thanks, as always.

Where are you going to be during your trip and how long is it?

I don't think you mention that above, but I could have missed it since your paragraph is pretty long.

Have you been to Florence before?

How "limited" is your time in Florence? Have you made a list of the things you want to see and estimated the amount of time needed? What would you be sacrificing in Florence to spend the day in the countryside? Have you investigated what to expect weatherwise?

We'll have only about a day and a 1/2 in Florence without the wine tour. Short, I know, which is why I'm torn.

Hi, clairej04 -

It depends on what you want to see and experience, but for perspective, 4 days were not enough for me to see everything I wanted to see in Florence. With only 1.5 days there, I personally wouldn't consider using any of my time outside the city!

Enjoy!

We had three full days in Florence in February - and used one of them to do a winery/pasta making class with Accidental Tourist which took us out of the city into some very lovely countryside.

Even though it was February and was a very chilly, overcast day, it was still beautiful and very enjoyable.

We did not have enough time in Florence (two remaining days) but the day spent with Accidental Tourist was a highlight of our entire trip.

With only 1-1/2 days, my personal opinion is that you do not have enough time. Jeans suggestion is a very good one. It all depends on what is important to you. However, don't think that just because it is winter it won't be beautiful. Of course it will be different from spring or summer but beautiful in its own way.
