Why is Salzburg so BUSY!?!
Hey all,
I've been trying without much success to book a hotel in salzburg for Sept 22nd to Sept 25th. I've been sending out emails and requests for the past 2 weeks and all I've been getting are "we're booked" responses. I think I finally found a place: Schwaerzler Hotel Neutor
But I'm just wondering what's going on in Salzburg at that time to make it soooooooo BUSY!?!? Am I missing something? Am I going in the middle of some big event? I'd love to visit salzburg...but I'd rather not go if it's going to be PACKED with tourists that weekend.
Also, has anyone stayed at this hotel? Good or bad place?
Thanks!

I was thinking that. I'm actually traveling FROM the oktoberfest to go to salzburg as the next leg of my trip. I think it's only 2 hrs away by train & oktoberfest will be in full swing. I'm HOPING that's why...at least that means all the tourists will be in Munich during the day...leaving the salzburg museums with less crowding.

This is a big Mozaart anniversary year, and things are even more packed than usual. September is probably the opening of the opera/symphony season, just as it is in London and Paris, adding even more of a strain on what isn't a very large city.

Although it's a little late for the OP, I just checked the www.hotels.de site and there were about a dozen hotels showing doubles available, but at rates higher than usual.
There was also hotel availability at St. Gilgen and Bad Reichenhall, both of which are within a reasonable distance of Salzburg with frequent bus service and with charms of their own.
Babs, have you found anything?

Perhaps you could consider one of the smaller towns near Salzburg? St. Gilgen, as BTilke mentioned, would be a good suggestion. We stayed near Berchtesgaden last year. The town is small but nice and you would be about 20 minutes from Salzburg. The prices in these areas should be a lot cheaper.

Hi All,
Thanks for the many helpful responses. I ending up finding a single room in the Hotel Neutor. Seems like a pretty good place, and the price wasn't too bad. I think it was around 90 euros per night. Now I can enjoy Salzburg! YAY!
