Where to stay near Amsterdam

Hello! My husband and I are planning on taking a 4 day trip to Amsterdam May 1 - 4. We'll be traveling with a party of 6 and we have our own car. Does anyone have a great recommendation for a hotel or b&b for us to stay at? We don't care about staying in downtown Amsterdam. We would be fine staying 1/2 hour out even. We're definitely planning on seeing the tulips and we will probably stop in Brussels on our drive up (we live in Frankfurt). Any advice would be wonderful! Thanks.

Others will help with recommendations but do remember that 1 May is Ascension Day and a holiday in the Netherlands, and since April 30th is Koninginnedag, so also a holiday, places may well be booked up at that time. Koninginnedag in Amsterdam attracts a lot of foreign visitors! A lot of things may be closed on Ascension Day.
The Dutch will also be making a long weekend of it.

The Dutch will also be making a long weekend of it.

Ascension Day and/or May 1 are holidays in many countries and MANY Europeans will be taking the "bridge day" for a long weekend.

Try Haarlem, Leiden, or Zandvoort for beds to be near the tulips in Keukenhof. In Zandvoort look for signs "Zimmer Frei" for low cost beds. Very few of them serve breakfast but there are many cafes and a couple of grocery markets in town. Virtually none of the ZFs are on the web so you just drive around town looking for signs. I've stayed in several but don't have any names or numbers. Sorry.

BTW, I used to live in Aschaffenburg and the drive to Zandvoort was about 6 hours. It is a great beach town in August.

Oh no. Do not waste a half second of your trip going to Brussels. Put that on the back burner ... like, after you have been to every other city in Europe.

BTW, I also formerly lived in Haarlem. I will be arriving on Saturday 26 April to get in condition for the Queen's Day celebration on 30 April. If you can go to Holland a couple of days early you will have the party of your life in Amsterdam. Royalty sucks but this town REALLY rocks on her birthday.

Hopscotch, I realise that the Dutch are not the only ones making a long weekend of it, but this year it is an extra long break for the Dutch and may effect things more. Koninginnedag is in fact more likely to impact on bookings around that time, since it is gradually being taken over by foreign visitors to Amsterdam. And I have that from Amsterdammers who no longer feel it is their celebration, and are leaving the city for the first time to avoid it all.

Indeed the Netherlands will be crowded, lots of tourists of various countries and all schools are closed for 1 - 2 weeks.
Better make reservations as soon as possible.
Better chance if you book more inland and farther away from Amsterdam and the coastal area.
Check a.o. tripadvisor or the Amsterdam tourist board site.

It seems they have moved location but I can highly recommend Peter and Boogaards.
