Where to go in Europe in December

We are planning to take advantage of cheap fares to London for the beginning of December and would like to spend a few days in London and a few days somewhere else in Europe. I am looking for suggestions of places in Europe (that's not Italy) where the weather would be mild to visit. I know it won't be warm, but we'd be fine with temperature in the 50's. We are in our early 30's and are looking for a city to explore, sit in a cafe, walk around a square, and soak up some culture.

Any suggestions would be appreciated - thanks!

I've never been to Spain, but perhaps Madrid or Barcelona would fit the bill? Spain was the first place to come to my mind.

Spain; either Madrid or Barcelona. I did both in December 2004, and the weather was probably better than most other places.

The last two years we've been to Prague and Budapest between Christmas and New Year. although winter, they are great winter destinations because they are all geared up for snow and cold and with the right clothes, you can take them in your stride. But if you are determined to defy nature, B'lona, Sicily or Andalucia would be my choice. However, if you hit bad weather there, they won't be able to cope!

Portugal qualifies as "mild" plus there's culture. No too much rain like further east. A rental car to explore the gorgeous countryside would we an advantage.
