It is weird, but in 40 years of travel, the only thing I've ever had stolen was a 6 person life raft I was bringing down to the Caribe.
Now, in the days of Eastern Airlines, it was pretty common for my bags to go to Puerto Rico, regardless of where I was traveling. But, after their vacation the bags would soon find me, be it Trinidad or Topeka.

Not me but my son.
Last year he went Easyjet to Sicily. He and his girlfriend were camping and backpacking. Rucksacks are always vulnerable on flights, even with all the straps tightened and tied. They also had a tent with them, attached to one of the rucksacks. On the way back (luckily) his back pack was wrecked between Sicily and Milan. All credit to Easyjet though - they replaced it within two weeks - and with a better model!

I was visiting San Francisco last year. I am waiting at the luggage carousel, watching everything come down the chute except my bag. I was noticing an occasion can of beer or pop in the carousel and thought that it was strange. Then, a big blue and white plastic cooler comes through on its side with the top open! Can are flying all over and they are exploding! So, I'm watching the cans exploding, beer and pop spraying everywhere. Guess whose suitcase followed the cooler? Yep, mine and it was soaked! I look at the woman next to me and say something about why in the world would some idiot bring a COOLER let alone put cans of beer and pop in - and not secure the lid with a strap. She replied, "I wasn't sure if I could get Diet Cooke and good beer in San Francisco."
Fortunately, my bag was wet only on the outside, nothing inside got wet.

cls2paris, that's one of the funniest luggage stories I've read!
Coming back from a semester in Europe, big suitcase did not arrive home when I did. When it was delivered a few days later, the corner was torn and a wheel was missing. Had to pick it up at airport. Continental repaired it and delivered it to me a few days later.
Don't know how good the repair was. Afraid to use it again given how much it was torn! (And only travel with carry-on sized cases since.)
