What to wear in Venice...
I have been to Venice several times so I am familiar with the typical style of dress for most occasions. This time however things are a bit different. I was fortunate enough to receive an award for the Venice Photo Competition and will be attending the opening night reception, wit what was referred to a refined a cocktail party, for 200 people plus media and another cocktail party and dinner.
Yikes !!!! Its a great honor, but while I have presented at conferences, and am comfortable in most settings I am truly unsure of how formal these events will be. I of course will dress nicely ( business attire) but what level of formality would be appropriate for these events. I do not want to over dress, but do not want to be inappropriately underdressed either.
I was thinking a skirt/sweater with the skirt being a calf length more formal skirt with a cashmere sweater to make it less fussy. I have worn this to holiday parties here and it has been fine. Also, looking for a little black dress for the other.
I am thinking something along the lines of an office party attire in the states, but will that be too much. Apologies for the flustered questions, but I really want this to go well.
Thank you for the advice. JH

Congratulations! Sounds a real honour. I too would love to see the photos.
I have always found a well-cut black dress, medium heeled shoes and a nice piece of jewellery is appropriate for any doubtful occasion.

Hello worldcom. First of all congratulations!!
I have no idea of your age and I do want to say the last time I made a suggestion about dressing for an event I was accussed by a "snob" here that I sounded like I was dressing a greatgrandmother from the 1950's, LOL.
But I will try again.
Unless the invitation has specified formal dress it seems to me that your calf length skirt with a cashmere sweater would be lovely. And a black dress sounds wonderful also.
Unless you are involved with celebrities and the LA girls I believe your choices are perfect. The ladies I know in the region of Venice and elsewhere in Italy also dress for special occassions with style and simple but well fitted clothes. Nothing splashy so to speak. And btw, the more money they have the more simple they dress. Quality over "splash". I honestly think your thoughts are perfect. If you do have any questions regarding anything can you contact the committee to ask for information? I would think since you state that it is referred to as a "refined cocktail party" they would like to see you dressed ladylike, which certainly sounds like you will be.
And again, congratulations. I too hope if it is possible that we can see your photos.

Thank you so much for all your kind words and advice. I tend to more conservative style clothing, but usually wear a bit more office/professional looking than this event may be. I am in my 30's, and I want to look refined, with a more classic elegant type style. I’m not the “artsy” dressing type. Probably a lot of this worry is nervous excitement since this event is in one of my favorite cities and I really wasn’t expecting this kind of honor.

hello worldcom, as it is late here I am going to save the pleasure of looking at your photos tomorrow when I can really enjoy them. I love beautiful photographs.
EmBee's suggestion for an elegant look is what I consider appropriate for a special occassion that does not require formal. I think you will be beautiful and will certainly be appeciated by the Italians, that I can assure you. Again, congratulations and thank you for sharing your joy with us.

The "little black dress" didn't get its reputation for lack of style, admirers, etc., whether you are 30 or not 30 IMO.
If you have the body for it I would consider it..strongly. An elegantly-dressed individual is NEVER out of place.

A black dress always looks good.
If you wear a skirt and top, pick something that is not too 'office', such as this lovely Anna Sui skirt; (sorry; can't get the link to work; look up www.net-a-porter.com go to Designers and find Anna Sui; there's a beautiful black and white knee-lenght skirt there, with a short black jacket).
And I'm always recommending Diane von Furstenberg; easy to find if you live in the US, they are easy to pack, don't crease and always look good, either with boots or heels. And a classic black DVF wrap dress never goes out of style.

What beautiful photographs! I've always found masks to be very mysterious and mystical so those are my favourites but the gondola shot is beautiful too. It reminds me of the paintings of the Canadian artist, Alex Colville. You get the impression when you see his paintings (and your photo) that something is just about to happen.
Re what to wear? I like your ideas and say it's all in how you accessorize. Accessorizing is not my strong suit. I can barely get to work in the morning without toothpaste in my hair. You, however, are clearly an artist and will look superb.
