What to do in Leige, Belgium?
Will be in Maastricht, Netherlands next month. I'm thinking about a day-trip to Leige. Any ideas on things to do???
I like history (eg. World Wars I & II, castles, walled towns), shopping/markets, nature (parks, forests, gardens, food & drink (beer!!)

Luik (Liege) was just voted the second ugliest town in Europe by the readers of a Dutch newspaper. (Charleroi was the ugliest). They were right! I wouldn't bother with a trip there.
Since you are in Maastricht consider a trip to Eben-Email nearby for some WW2 history. www.fort-eben-emael.be/

Liège is a great destination if you want to visit a place unspoilt by tourism, yet I've to admit that it can sometimes be a bit hard to the eyes.
They've a splendid new railway-station by Santiago Calatrava and sunday's 'Marché de la Batte' (flea market) is very worthwile and bustling.
There are two American WWII-cemeteries nearby: Margarten (near Maastricht), Henri-Chapelle (near Aachen). More info: http://www.abmc.gov/cemeteries/cemeteries.php
