Visiting the Lake Regions in 07

My husband and I will be traveling to the lake regions in Northern Italy in 2007. We will stop in Lake Como, and Lake Garda.I would like names of hotels in the area. Also, has anyone ever visited a winery in the area and if so where?

just returned from Lake Como and we really enjoyed Albergo du lac in Varenna. There are many threads on this forum and on www.slowtrav.com about the merits of staying in Bellagio or Varenna or other towns. Also, there are many threads about the different lakes in the region. We spent 3 nights at Hotel Orta on lake Orta and 3 nights in Varenna as part of a 2 1/2 week trip and were very happy. I am posting my trip report soon -- maybe even tonight!

Hello,
I used to live in Moniga del Garda and got married in Malcesine del Garda. It's beautiful and I hope not too many people discover it because if they did, they would stop going to Lake Como
I personally do not care for the wine there but Bardolino is the most popular place on the lake for it's wine. Be sure to take a side trip to Verona (beautiful and home of Romeo & Juliet) while you're there.

when i booked Albergo du Lac in Varenna in february, their rooms with balconies were already booked for summer weekends. It's harder to get a room at the Lakes for weekends in peak season; much easier during the week. We had a view, but no balcony. however, their public terrace is so lovely that it worked out fine.

We toured two wineries during our week stay at Lake Garda. The first was Lenotti in Bardolino. This tour was set up by my company and we took our whole group of 25. That included 13 kids (ranging from 3 yrs to 16yrs!) Mr Lenotti was a gracious host and we had a wonderful time touring his winery-esp trying all the wines! The kids really enjoyed watching the botteling process- in fact I think we have a 45 minute video of that-LOL!
Our next vineyard was set up by the owner of the agriturismo that we stayed at. This was Zonin located in Montebello (I think). You can check the web for more info and directions. This was great- they have a museum about the history of wine and also the history of their vineyards. We went to a tasting room and sat at desks and tried 5 wonderful wines and then we were led into a tasting room where we could try any of the wines they sell. They had a special cheese and meat platter for us to go along with the wines.
At both of these vineyards I have to recommend the excellent Amarone-yummy!!
And I can't not mention a tip I got from this site. One of the highlites of my trip... Bottega del Vino in Verona. A little wine bar down a side street not far from the Arena. If you go order the cheese platter and the Amarone Risotto!!!!!!!!!!
Cheers!

I hope I was able to send you the Hotel Metropole website and a trip-advisor report on this hotel.
We're staying there in May'07 in a lake-front room with a large terrace. There are only 5 of these rooms. You can view pictures on the trip-advisor site Good Luck!!!
