Visiting Budapest then on to Austria
What is the best route to go from Budapest to Vienna, Halstatt and Salzburg? I am looking at 2 weeks and would like to fly out of Vienna home. I'm thinking of 5 nights in Budapest then take the train to Halstatt for 2 nights then on to Salzburg for 3 nights and then train to Vienna for 4/5 nights. Is it a long trip by train from Budapest to Halstatt?

Budapest to Hallstatt takes 7 h 37 minutes - you can leave Budapest at 9:10 am or 11:10 am, etc and change only once - in Linza with about 30 minutes in between trains - these are RJ or RailJet trains - the best possible once. For this and any train schedule in Europe go to the home page of the German Railways - www.bahn.de/en and simply put in the towns and a date and you'll get all the trains for that day and many details about them.
You can easily buy that ticket in Budapest but you may get some discounts by buying far in advance on the Hungarian Railways web site but then often your ticket is for a specific train on a specific date and can't be changed nor refunded (these are general conditions of discounted tickets - not sure about the Hungarian railways policies.
For lots of great info on trains check out these IMO superb sites: www.seat61.com - great info on discounted tickets; www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com (to use the www.bahn.de/en svchedule site you can check the link to it on the latter's site's home page as they give you several useful tips for fully using the many features of bahn.de that may not be apparent at first glance.

Assuming that you will want to spend some time in Salzburg, you can take a train from Budapest to Salzburg. There are high speed trains as well as slower ones. You can book online with the Hungarian rail site for the Budapest to Salzburg portion... http://www.mav-start.hu/english/index.php
After a visit in Salzburg you can take a train or bus to Halstatt. In either case you will need to take the ferry across the lake. More info at http://www.hallstattaustria.net
from Halstatt after taking the ferry across the lake again you can take the train to Vienna. Depending on where you are staying in Vienna and how much luggage you have, you can take a bus to the airport, a train or a taxi.
There is no need to backtrack from Halstatt to Salzburg in order to go to Vienna

maxima's idea of taking a bus between hallstatt and Salzburg is IMO a great one!
Not sure there are direct buses but I took a train from Hallstatt to Bad Ischl - a nice town too with an old Austrian-Hungarian emperor;s hunting lodge stuffed with hunting trophies everywhere - then by bus thru the fantastic Lake District to St Wolfgang, set on placid Lake Wolfgang - a cute town with a famous steam train climbing a mountain behind it - then go by boat to St Gilgen (or bus) and then postal bus to Salzburg.
A wonderful day's trip thru stunning scenery - better than the rail route via Attnang-Puchheim, the most scenic part of which you will have already seen on the way up from Linz.

Ideally you could stay one night in the fantastic Lake District and maybe just one in Salzburg itself?
