Visit to Scotland
Will have 6 days in Scotland, training from York. Should I travel to Edinburgh area or Glasgow or split the days for both areas? This is my first trip so please suggest major sites. Thanks Emily

That mostly depends on why you are going to Scotland? Do you just want to see cities? Or do you want to see some of the scenery/countryside? What sorts of things interest you? Do you plan on renting a car or depending on public transport? When is the trip? This can make a HUGE difference where you can go and what you can see. What research have you done/what are you already planning to see?
There are quite literally hundreds of major sites in Scotland, so tell us more about you/your plans and we can help . . .

I mentioned that I will be taking the train from York. I will not have a car and will depend on public trans. or perhaps a day trip tours. My trip to Paris has fallen through so since I was going to be in England I thought I's go to Scotland. I have not done any research, thus my question on recommendations for major sites. We like castles, history, old villages and shopping.

The train from York to Edinburgh takes about 2 hours, so with a morning start, you'll have what, 5 1/2 days? Does the six days include departure day?
In Edinburgh a couple of easy choices in regard to castles would be Edinburgh Castle and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. You could do a day trip to Linlithgow to visit Linlithgow Palace (Queen Mary) or do Stirling Castle in Stirling both accessible via train. Note that I think trying to do all of these would be a bit of overkill with your limited time.
Also Rosslyn Chapel via the 51 bus. The city of Edinburgh can easily take up several days. There is plenty to see/do there that fits yur requests for castles, history and shopping. Not so much <I> old villages. </I>Without a car, I'm a bit at a lost as to recommendations. I've just mentioned the easy options. There are several companies that offer day trips to the usual tourist places. I Like Glasgow and think it gets short shrift. I'd plan on at least a day there.
A few more specifics especially in regard to time allotment would help.

Yes, I know you are taking the train to Edinburgh, and one doesn't need/want a car IN the city. My question really was whether you would be driving outside of Edinburgh. Is there a reason you don't want to rent a car? You can get to lots of wonderful places by train, but MANY more if you drive.
You said "I" several times, and then said "We like castles, history, old villages and shopping. -- so are there more than one of you -- or is that an 'Imperial We"
There are a couple of good companies that do day and longer tours from Edinburgh. Rabbies and Timberbush

Edinburgh is a beautiful, walkable city. You can also take 1 day bus trips to the highlands, which are very interesting. And the train to St. Andrews stop, bus runs from train station to town every thirty minutes. I really enjoyed my visit and the highland tour.

Opus: "<i>3 days each (York/Edinburgh might do you very well. Plenty to see in both cities and good day trips if desired.</i>"
Yes, but I read the OP as meaning she has 6 days for Scotland after arriving from York, not 6 days to cover Scotland AND York.
