You can try the Galleria. But it's getting a bit late and they may be full.
I don't have the e-mail address with me but if you drop me a line or do a search on them I'm sure you'll find it.

The best way to fit this kind of budget constraint is to not go to Venice. This isn't meant to sound altogether cynical, but it's a reality reminder that Venice is expensive. If you were planning three nights there, plan your trip to cut back to two nights, and raise your lodging budget - - then spend the third night somewhere else, headed in the direction of your next destination, for example. Same thing goes for getting TO Venice - - it might make sense to plan a night somewhere close (but substantially cheaper) so that you can get an early start on your first day in Venice.

Venice is wonderful; because of its uniqueness, it ought to be everyone's SECOND destination in Italy. I think there are many, many other tie votes for where to choose as your FIRST destination - - I don't mean that every part of Italy is like every other part - - but all of the rest of Italy is more similar to every other part than they are similar to Venice.

And a night in the Dolomites, on your way towards Venice or away from it, and likewise a night in Verona or Padua or numerous other choices - - is the best way to "average down" your cost of Venice lodging.

Last of all, Mestre and Lido will help save money, but at a "price" - - of NOT being in "La Serenissima" itself during the two best hours of the day - - the last hour before you go to bed, and the first hour after you wake up.

Best wishes,

Rex

I betyou can find an inexpensive place to stay! We have stayed at Hotel Silva several times at short notice. It should be around $100 or under. It is in a great location- Castello, near Maria Formosa Campo, and if it is full, ask them the name of the hotel next door to it. These are the kind of hotels that Italians stay in, inexpensive and not touristy, but very good value!
Tel 522-7643 They have a fax, butI would have to look for it. Oh , and eat your meals at Vino, Vino, delicious and very inexpensive, close to the Fenice and you will eat better than at most expensive places!

Hotels in Venice under $100 translates to 1-star services ... You may try one of the following:

a) Hotel Riva (Ponte dell'Angelo #5310, tel +39 041 5227034, fax +39 041 5228555) Romantically situated along the gondola serenade route canal, 200mts from San Marco, it has 19 bright modern rooms decorated in Venetian style. The hotel has gone through recent works. Reconfirm reservations! Recommended by Rick Steves. Hotel will ask for money order guarantee. Directions: It's behind San Marco where the canals Rio di San Zulian and Rio del Mondo Nouvo hit Rio Canonica o Palazzo.

b) Hotel Caneva (Ramo della Fava, 5515 - tel +39 041 5228118; fax +39 041 5208676). This hotel lays between San Marco and Rialto, on next to the Chiesa Maria della Fava. Most of its 23 big, bright and clean rooms overlook the Rio della Fava canal. One of the best values in Venice in its price range. Directions: From the Rialto vaporetto stop and the Grand Canal on your back, walk straight on Calle Larga Mazzini, taking a left on the second street (via 2 Aprile) and a right as soon as you can (on Calle Stagneri detta della Fava), crossing the bridge.

c) Locanda Casa Petrarca (Calle degli Schiavini, 4386 - telefax +39 041 5200430). Very small and cozy pension (7 rooms), 200mts off San Marco square. Tiled floor rooms are big (for Venice standards) and clean. There's no breakfast room but it can be arranged to be served in the room. Manager/owner Nelli speaks English. Reserve well in advance and be sure to reconfirm a couple of days before you get there. Pension recommended by Rick Steves. Best call in the mornings or evenings to catch Nelli at the pension. Directions: With your back to St. Mark's basilica, take last right off the square. Follow the canal and cross the bridge, turning left at the Bonvecchiati sign, and left again under the Sottoportego. From the San Marco Vallaresso vaporetto stop, walk straight on Calle Vallaresso, Frezzeria and Calle delle Colonne, to reach the Bonchevatti sign.

d) Albergo Doni (Calle del Vin #4656, tel/fax +39 041 5224267) 12 dim, but large, classy and airy rooms in a rather "dark", clean, hardwood, quiet building. Recommended by Rick Steves. Directions: It's two bridges behind San Marco, or walk east along the San Marco waterfront (Riva Degli Schiavoni), over two bridges, take the first left (Calle del Vin), and follow the signs.

e) Hotel Minerva & Nettuno (Lista di Spagna, 230 - tel +39 041 715968; fax +39 041 5242139) Simple hotel, with pretty and spacious rooms (a rarity in Venice). Breakfast can be taken in the small breakfast area or in your room at no extra cost. The owners of this hotel own a restaurant in the interesting Jewish Ghetto Nuovo area which is a short walk from the hotel and are therefore able to offer clients the opportunity of half board at a reasonable supplement. There are 32 rooms with and without en-suite facilities. Directions: 5 min walking from the train Station, on he left side of Lista di Spagna, part of a very the very popular thoroughfare that connects the train station to Rialto.

f) Albergo Casa Peron (Salizzada S Pantalon, 85 - tel. +39 041 710021; fax +39 041 711038). This hotel is in a calm neighborhood, midway between Piazzale Roma and Canal Grande from which the boat will proceed into the lagoon behind the islands of Giudecca and San Giorgio Maggiore. The hotel is managed by Scarpa's family who live in their hotel and is dedicated to every detail. There are 11 rooms, most of which with baths. The rooms are sunny and bright. Atmosphere is friendly and familiar. Directions: From San Toma vaporetto stop, take Calle del Traghetto and turn the first left, on Calle Campaniel; right after the bridge make a right on Fondamenta della Frescada, following left on Calle Marconi and taking the first right on Crosera; continue straight ahead (Calle dei Preti, Calle Vinanti and Salizzada San Pantalon).

You may try to contact these hotels/pensions directly. A few of them
might be bookable using
http://www.veniceinfo.it/ (1-star hotels).

Now, which one? Difficult to say! Personally, I only know the Caneva and the Minerva & Nettuno. If the
prices are indeed within the budget, I would undoubtely stay in the Caneva. I may have stayed at the Casa Peron but that was some 20 years ago and I wouldn't bet on it (the address seems right, though). In any event, the Caneva was superior in all aspects. The other places I mention (including Casa Peron) I got from a friend's list. Casa Petrarca, Riva and Doni are recommended by Rick Steves if that's of any good! Unfortunately, my friend ended up staying elswhere. He visited the Riva though, and told me he would have liked to stay there. I've also seen a few positive indications in r.t.e. newsgroup. That's the only reason I'm listing it first. Eventually, both the, the Riva and Caneva are a toss up, so price would actually decide the matter. I have no way to rate the Petrarca and Doni against the Caneva ... at most, it's an educated guess <g>. I've seen some positive comments on the Petrarca. Not much about the Doni other than it's listed by Rick Steves. IMO, the Minerva & Nettuno is handy and could be a good choice on occasions. I don't know why my friend listed the Casa Peron ... I kind of like the location, though, quite away from Venice's turmoil. Maybe you should go about confirming rates first and make a decision with hard facts on hand.

Paulo

Going to Venice can be expensive, but there are many hotels under $100. Several years ago, I think 6, I stayed at a hotel for 32,000 lira, yes, thats right. It was clean, and looked like a college dorm with 2 twin beds. The bathroom was outside of the room, but frankly it was July, and I was just happy to get a room. Not to mention, I was barely ever in the room. In my opinion, there is too much to see in Venice to worry about your room. As long as its clean, with no bugs, with a half way decent bed, I don't care about anything else. I spend time in my room only to sleep. Everyone is different with their travel needs and desires. Decide what is important to you, and make decisions accordingly.

Hi Jane,
I'm planning on being in Venice first weekend in June. Every hotel that sounded interesting for less then $100 was booked except for Albergo Doni. The place sounds great and it's on the canal. They quoted me L130,000 for a double room with shared bath. I had to send them a check for $50 to hold the room. The phone number is 041-5224267. If you would like any other budget suggestions email me (we're starting our trip in Sicily and ending Lake Como. Good luck!!

Try Hotel La Rezidenza-doubles are 90 to
ll0/ night according to Fodor's. We stayed at Pensione Seguso and it included breakfast and either lunch or dinner for about $150/ night; this is a very good deal, as dinners are expensive in Venice and the food was plain, but very good, and the place was quaint!!!

My travel web site has the hotel information (phone number, address, etc. ) on Hotel Galleria, whjch my husband and I stayed back in May 1998. http://sites.netscape.net/monicapileggi/travel. It's next to the Accademia bridge, an excellent location! We paid about $85 at that time. I also include the names, addresses, and prices of the restaurants we enjoyed. Venice can be expensive, but there are restaurants which are reasonably priced. Enjoy Venice!!!
