I'd be pleasantly surprised if the rates at the Danieli are under $300 in June.

You can search for suggestions at
www.venere.it and then run some of your choices past people here.
You can also search on this message board for Venice hotel, and elsewhere on this Fodor's website for Hotels, and see the Rants and Raves comments.
The following hotels are just a few of those that have been often recommended on this message board. Please note that many popular small hotels may already be fully booked for June:
Hotel Flora, Metropole, Leon Bianco,
Ca'Pisani,Giorgione, Colombina, Bisanzio, Hotel American, Ala, Do Pozzi, etc. I believe they all have a/c but you might want to check.
I have a long file on Venice; if you'd like to see it, email me.
good luck

Debby---
I've recommended this small and comfortable hotel on this board before, and it sounds as if it fits the bill for you. It's right down the Grand Canal and around the corner from the luxury hotels such as Danieli and the Metropole, and it has A/C and a very accommodating staff. It's called Hotel Campiello, web site www.hcampiello.it. Furthermore, I can guarantee it's well under your $300 limit, probably even under $200 if you bargain a bit; and it's in a good location just off the Grand Canal and a stone's throw (well, literally, maybe two stones' throws) from St. Marks.

Debby,

We stayed at a charming small hotel called Albergo Al Piave. We had a family suite which consisted of 2 bedrooms (one with a queen and the other with twins) and 1 bathroom. The bathroom had a stall shower which is unusual. I think we paid around $225 for the suite. Breakfast is included and offered more variety than any of the other hotels we stayed at. It is very, very clean and the owner is very friendly and speaks good english. I would return to this hotel in a heart beat. Check out the website www.elmoro.com/alpiave. It's kind of hard to find the first time because of the winding streets but very centrally located to the sights. It's in the Castello section, just a few blocks from Piazza San Marco. It does have air conditioning but no elevator. Have a great trip!

Hi Debby,
You might want to check out Locanda Sturion, near the Rialto bridge. A couple of their rooms are actually large enough to be quads. The only downside of this hotel is a lack of elevator, but the marble staircase is beautiful.

Buon Viaggio,
BC

We stayed in a quad at hotel flora last march. I think it's also a triple room, they just added an extra bed. It was a good size room with 2 bathrooms (1 had a shower and the other didn't). It had a queen and 2 twin beds. The hotel was very charming, comfortable and quiet, a few short blocks away from san marco. It has a lovely garden to have breakfast or an afternoon drink. At that time it was L600.000 for a 'quad'.

We have stayed at the San Moise, Saturnia and the Flora (all within steps of each other in San Marco area near the upscale shopping district but within a 5 minute walk to San Marco square). All of these hotels were nice boutique hotels. Although the rooms in the San Moise were small, the view from the canal side rooms were the best of all of the hotels. We would throw open the shutters and gondolas would float past the very small canal just below the window. I could have sat at that window for hours.
The Saturnia is very nice and the staff is super. They have a new hotel just across the bridge to the Accademia. I personally prefer this arear (Dorsoduro) to San Marco for its restaurants and less crowded atmosphere but for first time visitors to Venice, San Marco is probably better.
