Vatican City Museum
My girlfiend and I are going on a cruise, arriving in Rome on october 6th 2011. We want to see the Vatican City Museum. We have seen the shore excursions offered from Holland America, as well as many excursions offered online. My girlfriend does not speak english and will probably not benefit too much from a guided audio tour if it is strictly in english. Are there self-audio guided tours in french inside?

hi Paul,
here's the official vatican museum website:
http://mv.vatican.va/3_EN/pages/MV_Home.html
if you follow the links, you'l see that you can get audio guides in 8 languages including french. you can also book a time to visit the museums on line, thus avoiding the queues. you don't have to do a tour, or even to get an audio guide if you don't want to.
beware that if you do have an audio guide, you must return it to the entrance where you got it from when you have finished, which means that you can't avail yourselves of the door at the back of the sistine chapel which leads out to the side of St. Peter's and enables one to enter the basilica without queuing to get through security again. mind you, this door is not always open anyway.

I just want to add a warning about time. If you do not prearra bye for a guided tour, you might very well not have time to do this visit. The line can be hours long during the high season, and worse on weekends. You can get a tour or audio guide in many languages, but you might have to take different tours if you do not also speak French. I believe that audio tours are also available in French.
