US money / British pounds Girls trip to London

I have 5 close friends + myself (they have never been to London. How is the money exchange rate? ... One of my friends going with our group has never been anywhere out
of the US but is convinced that Great Britain only takes Euros and no longer takes any British pounds.

Does that seem true to anyone on Fodors?

Thank you in advance for any advice on that subject?
Sincerely,
Luvlondon

It's been a few years since my husband and I have been to London

Your friend is absoultely wrong. The UK does not take the Euro, they still use the pound and that will not change in the foreseeable future. Your best bet is to get money from the ATM, otherwise you will pay hefty exchange fees.

I'm sorry to say this but it's always laughable when a person who has never been outside the US would think she knows so much.

Anyway, if you need any further assistance I will be happy to help if I can. You will find a great many people on this board who either live in London or have travelled to London many times.

Sorry if my last post sounded snarky but I also have friends who have never been anywhere, yet they presume to know so much without doing any research.

Let me expand on what I said about the ATM. When you get to the UK you can use your ATM card to get pounds. This is by far the cheapest and most convenient way to exchange money. Don't even think about trying to cash traveler's checks, nobody wants them. When you make a w/d from the ATM be advised you are withdrawing that amount in pounds, not US $. For example, when you enter a w/d amount of "100," you are asking for £100, not $100 worth of pounds. Also be sure to advise your bank in advance that you will use your ATM card in the UK, otherwise they might flag it for irregular activity. The same applies if you plan to make purchases with your credit cards there. Just recently I made a purchase from a British company and they flagged it because I hadn't advised them a foreign transaction would come thru.

Thank you P_M for your advice. I agree with what you wrote and I tried to tell her the same thing...I've only been to London a couple of times...I just could not make her understand. I also was a travel agent for several years and sent lots of clients to London and other parts of the UK.

I had to laugh out loud when she insisted that only Euros were in use in London.

Thanks again for your reply.
