Apologies for so many last minute posts and requests for info on short notice.... We were not able to plan for this trip due to personal reasons so trying to do so on the fly... Tomorrow we drive from frankfurt to cochem... Is there suggestions of scenic drives to get there instead of the autobahns that the gps would take? We are looking for charming villages and beautiful landscapes... Any feedback will be very much welcome before tomorrow if possible...

You definetely should use the autobahn to get out of Frankfurt and the greater Rhein-Main region, appr. until you get to Wiesbaden or Bingen.
If time is no issue, you can drive the river valley roads (A66 to Wiesbaden, B42 to Koblenz, B49 to Cochem) along the Rhine and later the Mosel river.
Or take a shortcut from Boppard or St. Goar west to the Mosel on local roads as Koblenz itself is not really scenic.
That part of the Rhine valley is usually regarded as the most scenic. Climb the Loreley rock if you want.
I think the most scenic part of the Mosel valley is between Cochem and Bernkastel-Kues.
Many pittoresque towns in between. You will want to stop more or at each of them.
If you won't have any time to see that part of the Mosel upstream from Cochem, you could indeed take the fastest route via B50 (which is like a motorway all way to the vicinity of Hahn airport), and take it slowly afterwards.
We would suggest using the GPS to take you to Rudesheim, then following 42, along the East bank on the Rhine to Koblenz and 49 to Cochem, along the Mosel. You might want to take some time out to take a cruise with KDRhine http://www.kdrhine.com/rhineschedule.htm. See this map http://www.castle-liebenstein.com/germany/rhine-river-castles/index.html to determine haw much of the river you would want to cruise. Both stretches of the river are beautiful. We did this several years ago on the way from Assmanhausen to Trier,
