trips from Trogir
In June of 2018 we will be staying in Trogir for 4 nights. We plan to visit Split from there by bus or ferry but would also like to do a day trip to some islands. Would appreciate input re this. Thanks.

You'll almost certainly have to go through Split for your day trips.
The easiest day trip to an island would probably by to Hvar, but you probably have other options. For example, I believe that you can get to and from Vis on a single day from Split, but I could be wrong about that, and it would be a lot of time on a ferry for relatively little time on that island.
If your day trip options aren't covered by the guidebooks you already have, I recommend that you consult the Rough Guide, and do be sure to check the ferry schedules carefully to make sure you can go and return on the same day.

Pop into the website for the Split ferries and take your pick. Trogir may also have day boats and even a little ferry or two worth looking at but I suspect the ferry bit (hydrofoil) starts from Split.

There are some island trips from Trogir, but it depends on if you wanted to go to a town (which the islands visited via Split would be better for) or just a beach/nature trip. The Trogir boats go to Drvenik Veli and Drvenik Mali.

Wouldn't it be more time efficient to be based in Split? You can still visit Trogir by public bus, or ferry from the Rive waterfront.
Had a few hours in Trogir a month ago, it's pretty, it's very touristy, very busy, and tbh the lanes and architecture could be a few jigsaw pieces of the Split Old Town.....it's really all small shops, restaurants, cafes, and tour groupsbeing herded round.
The Jadrolinija Ferries that run from Split to the islands are excellent. We were on Brac for a week, and got around by public bus to some lovely small coastal villages.
We also had 3 nights in Makarska, an hour south down the coast. Absolutely beautiful, a working town where tourism blends in seamlessly.
Back again in September, but just using Split to top and tail a couple of weeks in Bosnia Herzegovina.
