Traveling with Golf clubs

Should I allow my son to take his clubs....or encourage rentals? Is it a pain to check them? Are they allowed as a carryon item?

We will be traveling by train also between London and Edinburgh so I wondered if that would be a problem?

New to this so please advise.

They don't go as carry on. You have to pay for them as extra baggage on any flights I've been on and it can be quite expensive. Train is no problem though. Unless your son is pro/semi pro or you're going to be playing every day - I'd rent them.

My husband has golfed in Amsterdam, outside Paris numerous times, in Monaco and in Périgueux. He plays 'left-handed' therefore renting clubs was not a good option. He put his lightest walking bag inside a hard-side golf case, then folded and laid his clothes in the remaining space, therefore the golf case was also his suitcase. This was checked as a normal bag but treated as 'oversize luggage' when we retrieved the baggage at the airport. The last time he did this was about 3 years ago. There was no extra charge at that time. The bag was large but on wheels. Once we got to our hotel he only used the actual golf bag, and used the metro/RER system to reach some courses, or a taxi. He enjoyed it quite a bit, and played with locals each time. I think he has reached the 'been there, done that' stage because he's opted to forego golf the past several trips.

We ended up taking the clubs...hard travel case with wheels. No extra charges anywhere....even the train. They were just treated as big baggage and no one questioned them. So glad he took them, he enjoyed having is own.
