Travel within Italy/in the winter?

Hi, I will be studying abroad and hoping to travel within southern Italy in late December, is it too cold to enjoy the beaches there at this time? I'm hoping more to go to Puglia and the like more than Sicily, but really I'll go anywhere I can see the sea!

Also, does anyone know how the Italian train service is? Is it a good idea to take a train from Florence to Naples or would you be better off finding a cheap flight? Thanks for any insight!

please keep in mind that my budget is VERY low, being a student, and I would appreciate any info on saving a few dollars/euros while travelling!

Firstly, winter is not beach weather in Italy. If the weather is fine, you might enjoy walking on the beach but that's about it.
Secondly, the train service is excellent in Italy. Usually it is better to take the train than a cheap flight because the airports are always less convenient than the train stations which are usually pretty centrally located. Also, when you factor in getting to the airport, checking in a good while before your flight, waiting for any luggage and transport from the airport at the other end, there isn't much time saved by flying. An exception to this would be if you were looking to travel a long distance in one go ie. Milan or Venice to Sicily.

The website for Italian trains is www.trenitalia.com and you can price your trips by entering a date within the next 60 days. ES and IC trains will be the most expensive and fastest. Slower, cheaper trains are IR,R,D.

You can book tickets online within 60 days of travel. There are also specials listed so be sure to check for those.

Winter, even in southern Italy, is cold (as cold as the UK!), so no beaches for you, I'm afraid. Also, in Puglia, they only clean the beaches during the summer season, which means during winter you get all kinds of rubbish washed up onto the shore from passing ships.

If you're planning on Puglia, then you won't want a train to Naples. Get a train to Bari (northern puglia) or Brindisi, depending on where you want to go.

oops, i meant to put the florence to naples question separate! I know it's on the other side of Italy from Bari !

As for Flornence to Naples, would something like that be better to take a train or a bus? I've traveled in south america and the buses there are much better than the trains (in some parts), does anyone know if is this the same in Italy? Thanks!

Sometimes the busses are more efficient than the trains, just depends on where you are going. Try this bus link.

Most bus service in Italy is regional, and it sometimes is better for traveling within a region, say between small towns without train stations. But generally, trains are the way to go.
