Hi all,
We are planning to go to Paris in June. We want to visit country side after that and not stay in main towns..please suggests some beautiful towns or villages where we can stay for few days.also what would be the best mode of transport to reach those places from Paris..thanks..

Take the train and rent a car. Your question is SO broad as to be unanswerable. Have you read any books about German towns? Do you like mountains? How long will you be gone?

Well if there are just two of you the train is good value for getting to a lot of cities. I'd recommend Strasbourg as a pretty city with lots of old features, a chance to hire bicycles to get around.

But it does depend on what you like to do, there are so many options, chateaux, vinyards etc

Why don't you just read guidebooks on France and Germany. They will have lots of suggestions for you to consider. A travel forum is not really the place to ask people to list all the possibilities for you. As Gretchen says, your question is so broad as to be unanswerable.

Do you want to stay in small towns in France or Germany or both. Yes, this is a broad question. How long is your trip? How many days in Paris and how many days outside Paris? What are your interests. What sort of weather do you like? Do you like mountains or beaches or flat lands for biking? Some help from you would be a good thing.

For small towns in Germany you could pick (tourist) areas like the Rhine or Bavaria. They are not backwaters but very popular areas with small towns. Unless you indicate to us you want a different pathway... more information please!

Well Cochem is one town that can be a great base for a few days for both the Mosel, to me the most beautiful river valley in Europe and the nearby Rhine - the best part of the Rhine between Rudesheim/bingen and Koblenz - take the K-D boats thru this part (www.k-d.com)

so yes there are many possibilities but you will love Cochem and the Mosel and Rhine and it is relatively easy to get to from Paris by train - via Luxemmbourg and Trier to Cochem.

Once there you need no car as trains go up and down the Rhine as well as boats and to Cochem. For lots of good info on French and German trains check out these IMO superb informative sources - www.seat61.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

If you like wines Mosel whites are highly thought of and there is a winery to tour right in Cochem, around which the steep inclines of the Mosel are largely clad in vineyards. Cochem has the castle of your dreams poking out of a vineyard-carpeted hill in the town center.

Burg Eltz, one of the most famous castles in Germany, is a short distance from Cochem by train to Moselkern then taxi or walk up thru lovely forests.

Biking? The Mosel is one of Europe's primo bike places with bike paths hugging the river the whole way.

so yes lots of choices but here's one you will surely love!

backwaters are backwaters for a reason - they are ordinary towns with little to see or do - anyplace that is neat has tourists and the neater they are, like Cochem and the Mosel and Rhine, the more tourists they attract. Like a magnet. If there's nothing especial to attract little will come.
