I've never had any problems with my camera or camera bag. As for the backpack, don't keep any valuables in it.

a backpack should only hold things like a water bottle, guide book, etc. Nothing of value should ever be on your back where you can't see what's happening.

I carry a backpack style camera bag. When you get into crowded areas make sure you wear it backwards or move it to the front of you. I also keep my hand on the zipper.

I usually carry at least one SLR hanging off of my shoulder and I've never had a problem except for banging it into things. Just remember to ALWAYS keep at least one hand on it and don't leave it hanging on the back of a chair or on the side of the table when eating where it is an easy target for a snatch and run type of crime.

My neice has been living in Europe this last year and frequently uses a back pack but does NOT keep anything of real importance in it. My newphew traveled around the world twice and learned the backpack lesson the hard way on his first trip. He hadn't been in London for 20 minutes and discovered his passport and credit card were stolen out of his backpack. It was a tough lesson, but he was much more careful after that and had no further problems.

As above, backpack is fine as a tote just don't have valuables in it. As long as your camera stays on your neck, I don't see a problem with that either (sound kind of uncomfortable though, any chance we can talk you into a digital, or are you a professional photographer?)
