Train to Melk from Vienna
We will be in Vienna in early December. I wanted to visit Melk and take one of the short cruises along the Danube, but the boat lines apparently close during the Winter.
We will still be taking a train from Vienna to Melk, but there are three options: direct, with a stop at Amstetten, and with a stop at St Polten. The times are about the same. Which of these routes is the most scenic?

We spent a week in Bruges and didn't run out of things to see; in fact, we had to forgo a planned daytrip to Antwerp for lack of time.
When we went to Brussels, the clerk at the station told us which train to take, but the conductor on the train said it was quicker to change trains at Antwerp. It might have been quicker if we knew our way around the station, but we didn't and their signs (I would say throughout Belgium) were not particularly helpful. So I would suggest you spend at least a day close to the Airport (in Brussels, early in the morning, we also found it difficult to find the right platform for the train to the airport, so that leg took longer than planned)
In many places you can rent a house or apartment for a week (getting a lower rate) and just leave a day early. In Bruges, we stayed here: http://www.homeaway.com/vacation-rental/p249511
It was very nice.

You know that Amstetten is on the other side (west) of Melk from Vienna; that is between Melk and Salzburg. I am not sure why you want to take this route. The Vienna-Melk is not particularly scenic. I just did this 2 weeks ago.
Choose whichever train, perhaps non RJ options, that matches your schedule. I took the 8:44 train via St.Pölten because I wanted to visit the garden before the 10:55 Melk English tour to have more time between the end of the tour and the boat departure to have lunch in Melk. However, in your case, you have more flexibility and the garden would not look that good in December. The 10:55 English tour is synched with the 9:18 direct train from Vienna. You have 25 min to make your way up the steep climb to the Abbey from the Melk train arrival to the start of the English tour.
