train: Rome to Florence

I will be arriving at the Rome airport at 12:30 PM on a weekday. My questions:

1. In the airport, where is the airport rail service to the central train station? Someone said it is right outside customs.

2. Is it a general ticket? and how much (Euros)?

3. Should I buy the ticket to Florence at the same time?

4. Any tips on finding my Florence train at the central Rome train station? Or is it similar to large American stations?

5. I read that the ticket machines do not work well...any comments?

Thanks. This is the part of my trip that I am most nervous about since I will be by myself at that point.

There is another current thread on this same FCO-Termini-Firenze question, so you might search and read all the info. Anyway, short answers to your questions:

1. Just follow the signs. Everything is well marked. You're looking for the train to Roma Termini (or just Termini).

2. I think it's currently 9.5 euros.

3. You can.

4. Just look at the board for the "Termini - Firenze S.M.N." train at the scheduled departure time. "Track" is "Binario" (or abbrevited "Bin&quot in Italian.

5. I haven't had problems with the ticket machines. The ticket lines may look long, but they move fast. If you can't organize yourself as quickly as you hoped, rest easy because the Rome Florence route has trains twice an hour.

When in doubt, just ask someone.

Hi Amie,

The board at Rome TE lists trains by their terminal station. Your train is likely to continue beyond Florence.

Look for trains leaving at your scheduled time. It will say if it is an ES* or an IC.

You can also ask a ticket agent.

4. The Leonardo Express from FCO arrive at a platform on the side of Termini. After you get off, walk towards the front of the train towards the main station concourse. It's a fairly long walk - just keep walking. The ES trains to Florence depart from one of the primary platforms in the front.

5. Ticket machines work fine. But you don't need to use one, as you should get both tickets at the same time at a manned counter at the airport train station.

At Termini, as you are making the long walk rkkwan described, you can go down the ramp to the underground passage (sottopassagio) that has moving walkways that can ease some of this walk.

Part way along this passgae, there's another passage to the right that crosses under all the train platforms with access to each one. You can use this passage to reach your platform and avoid walking all the way to the front of the platform. However, you will have to carry your luggage up one flight of stairs to the platform.
