train from London to Genova

I have been looking at the Rail Europe site and am trying to figure out the best way to travel to the above locations. I will probably travel straight there and back. Is the "Rail pass" the way to go? I've never traveled by train and I am a bit confused. Help!!

There are various routes (via Lille and Nice, Paris and Nice, or Paris and Torino) but the quickest journey is over 12 hours. Full schedules are on www.bahn.de.
Personally, I wouldn't want to spend a whole day on trains so I'd aim to break the journey, perhaps by having lunch and an afternoon in Paris, then getting the overnight train to Nice (couchettes and reclining seats only) or Milano (sleepers, but with an early arrival at 0538).
A rail pass is probably not worthwhile.

Wouldn't flying be a whole lot easier/faster?

Hi kerrilynn,

Taking a train is insane on such a long route, which is served by 2 airlines and thus has competitive fares.

Ryanair flies daily from London Stansted (STN) nonstop to Genova (GOA), the flight takes approx. 2 hours.

Fares start at approx GBP 70 roundtrip all in, checked luggage costs an additional GBP 18 roundtrip per suitcase.

www.ryanair.com

British Airways also flies to GOA daily fom London Gatwick (LGW), roundrip fares start at GBP 86 all in, so actually slightly cheaper than Ryanair if you're checking luggage.

If fares are approximately the same on both airlines, I would definitely choose BA over Ryanair!

Hope this helps,
Andre

Check this terrific site out for all the information on train travel you could ever want:

It's true it is a long train trip, is there a reason you wanted to go by train? Flying can be cheaper and quicker but there are other benefits to train travel.
