It's certainly an easy trip. You can go via Bern in about 2-1/2 hours from either station. The direct service leaves from Interlaken Ost and goes over the scenic Brünig Pass in a bit under two hours. Both routes run hourly.
See www.rail.ch for schedules and cost of each service. Since fares are based on mileage the Brünig route is cheaper at CHF50 for the R/T ... about USD30.

Public transport and the rail system in Switzerland is excellent ... arguably the best in the world, literally. You'll find using it simple and reliable, and enjoyable.

twenj

The route to Luzern via Mieringen ascends the Brünig Pass and goes by Sarnen. There is one train at 7:12 and one at 8:30 from Interlaken Ost. The 7:12 train takes a tad longer for some reason; the 8:30 departure gets there as Ed says.
There are trains back to Interlaken at 17:35 and 18:35 and 19:35.

I only checked the trains that do not require a change. They leave every hour on the half hour (8:30, etc). I only looked it up from 8:30 to 1:30 but it probably runs most of the day. The ride is just under 2 hours and as a previous poster wrote the train station in Lucerne is very conveniently located in town.
Below is the site I used.

http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en
