Do you know that this trip, by train, is 18.5 to 25 hours long with multiple changes?

It's best to fly.

1. Frankfurt to Marseille on the direct train from €38 www.bahn.de/en

Overnight in Marseille.

2. Marseille to Madrid from €89 on the daily direct train, www.capitainetrain.com

Both trains are impressive 200mph double deck TGV Duplex. You print your own tickets.

Rather than overnighting in Marseilles why not overnight in say Avignon, a more inviting city for a one-night stay - the train that goes onto Marseilles stops in Avignon TGV about an hour earlier - then hop a TGV or Spanish fast train form Avignon TGV to Barcelona and onto Madrid.

Direct TGV Avignon TGV to Madrid leaves about 8:30 am gets to Madrid Atocha station about 3:30m - direct though goes via Barcelona.

Yes a long LONG haul - why not fly? flying could be cheaper and certainly better if you just want to go straight thru.

For European train info check Man in Seat 61 who posts above his commercial site: www.seat61.com and other neat sites www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.

The Frankfurt to Marseille train leaves at 14:01 arrives 2145.

Next morning the Marseille to Madrid train leaves 08:04 and arrives 15:45.

It's always interesting to make an overland journey, and there's some great scenery along the way - quite apart from it being a chill out opportunity...

Man - why go to Marseilles when the trains you talk about both seem to stop in Avignon-TGV station - you get to sleep earlier and you can leave later on the same Marseilles-Madrid train that stops in Avignon-TGV - no if doing that staying in Avignon makes more sense that trekking a detour to Marseilles then coming right back thru Avignon.

well there is no need to go to Marseilles as said before and ou do not need to take a direct train to Marseilles or Avignon-TGV you can go throughout the day with a simple change of trains and then spend some afternoon hours in one of France's most old-worldish looking cities with smack in its center one of Europe's most imposing edifices - the vast Palace of the Popes where some popes lived for a short spell due to some chasm in The Church.

And see the famous Pont d'Avignon of child's nursery rhyme fame - Sur the pont ils ont dance.... or something - today's bridge still ends half-way into the river.
