Touring Delos
I will be in Mykonos on Aug. 12th - 14th. I didn't think about making reservations to tour Delos but think since it's high season perhaps I'd better do so. Any recommendations on who to book the tour through? Thanks,
Cynthia

We booked a tour once we got to Mykonos through a small local agency near the harbor. It was fine. At that time, the issue was high seas because the boat over was open. Also, the dock at Delos small. We had to check each morning to see if the boat was running. This may have changed. It was great fun--there were plenty of life jackets (not needed) and safety instructions were given before we left Myknonos. Can't recommend Delos highly enough. It was outstanding.

Do you want a tour, or are you happy to take the boat over and wander around by yourself? When I visited Delos in June, I just bought a ticket at the dock, and took the first boat over, which left Mykonos at 9:00am. I set off in the opposite direction of the tour groups, and had that end of the site practically to myself for nearly an hour. I've been to Delos before, so already knew my way around, but it's easy to follow the maps and guide yourself if you wish.

Thanks to both of you for your responses. I'd like to take a "tour" I want to make the most of it. The hotel told me that I could do it when I got there too. Sounds like it shouldn't be to difficult to get there outside of the winds.

Lee, as I recall there were boats leaving Mykonos hourly from 9:00am. The last boat returned from Delos about 1:30pm. That was early June - frequency may be greater during high season, I don't know.
IMO, the earlier in the day you get to Delos, the better. When my boat arrived about 9:30am, weather was still cool, and of course we were the first on the island that day. I wanted to get photos of the mosaics without crowds of people around. The mosaics are cordoned off, and some have only a small viewing area. Once the tour groups arrive one has to queue to get a peek.

For those interested in historical Delos without touristy Mykonos:
I read somewhere that from Paros and Naxos there's a daytrip by excursion boat to Delos.
Would anyone have info on value, duration and costs?

The excursion starts on Naxos then stops to pick up passengers at Naoussa on Paros before continuing on to Delos. It also makes a short stop on Mykonos for a quick look around before returning to Paros and Naxos.

tableronde, there is a day excursion leaves from Naxos, picks up passengers at Paros, arrives Delos about 10-10:30. YOu have about 3.5 hours on the island-- plenty. But it does not go back direct from Delos. The boat then takes you to Mykonos for about 3.5 hours, sets sail back at 1700 (5 pm) Here's the link:

I don't see the price on the website, I think u have to e-mail. A similar excursion from Naxos to Santorini was in the 50€ range...that one provided a bus to/from the port to places in Santorini, Delos/Myconos one doesn't but bus isn't necessary..
Yes Mykonos is touristy but no more so than Santorini -- both have the same huge cruise ships stopping.
