To Opera or not to Opera that is the question!

Going to Paris in March. Question: Should we buy tickets to see ballet in Opera Garnier while we are there, or should we just visit the building and tour one afternoon? Trying to get the best experience for our $$. Thanks.

If you like ballet, definitely go see the ballet - they're wonderful. But if ballet is not your thing, or you've never seen one before, I'd recommend just touring the building. The tickets aren't inexpensive, and ballet can be an acquired taste .

We did both, and as the tickets to the ballet are so very reasonable, definitely see the ballet. It is a lovely evening out, the people watching is half the fun, the lights are on and it is magical! You don't have to dress up too much, either. (And, if you don't enjoy it all that much, you may leave)
Have a glass of wine there for me!
Au Revoir!
Gigi

I love the ballet, no matter where I am, so I've been twice in Paris. Gigi is correct that the tickets are comparatively reasonable - much cheaper than in my home city! Being part of the crowd and seeing the building all lit up at night is a magical experience. The sets and costumes were spectacular, and the dancing outstanding. Truly one of the highlights of my trips!

We were disappointed in November--the ballet was sold out and we did not get to go. I'd recommend buying tickets in advance if you really want to attend!
Kathryn

YES YES YES. A highlight of my trip in Sept was the evening at the ballet. I got one of the cheapest tickets in the house which was above the rafters but absolutely worth it. An evening out is special no matter. It was a real native experience.
