Which do you think is the better neighborhood to stay in (ease of coming and going to and from monuments and other such places--assuming they're not located in that neighborhood, good restaurants, and interesting shops):
Santa Croce (San Cassiano) or the Dorsoduro (Locanda San Barnaba)?

Venice is not a big place, so really either district would do fine.
Guess you could say your stay will be easier if you're close to a vaporetto stop --- getting around in Venice is either by using these "bus boats" or by foot.
That being said, I very much enjoyed being in the Dorsoduro district. My accommodations (Hotel Galleria) was close to the Accademia vaparetto stop (good news/bad news --- a tad noisy for a light sleeper). And also the proximity to the Accademia bridge made it very convenient to walk over to San Marcos (St. Marks Square, the Doges Palace, etc).
