Tips on West/Southwest Ireland

My friend and I are thinking of flying into Shannon from London and then flying out of an airport in the Southwest. What would be the best airport to fly out of if we are ending our trip around Killarney? I thought it might be too tricky driving near Cork, as we are quite nervous about the driving...any other suggestions?

Thank you....is there any way to do this trip without driving? We would love to just avoid the whole driving issue and truly relax...what would you suggest?

Shannon being in Munster is technically South West. Cork airport is south of the city above Kinsale so no need to go in through the city. If you can drive you can drive, you are not scared of walking on the opposite pavement?

More important how long do you have and what/where other than Killarney do you want to visit

You won't be that relaxed if you avoid driving. I believe driving is quite easy and can be relaxing in that part of Ireland. If you use public transportation there are delays and frustrations and there is much you will miss and otherwise be able to stop for.
If you want to reduce driving stress, especially around Limerick, perhaps consider flying into and out of Kerry.
Also, Cork is not that impressive compared to Kerry.

Problem with Kerry is you are stuck with Ryanair, Shannon and Cork airport's give more options all round including choice of Car hire and if required Public transport.

Limerick has not been an issue for a couple of years since the opening of the Shannon tunnel as a natural progression of the N18 to the N20 the toll charge at the moment is €1.80.

Of course if you want to be staying in Killarney and just taking bus tours from there then Kerry airport makes sense.

Cork Airport is the only logical answer. You do not have to go near the city center. PS: Driving in Ireland is half of the fun!

Thank you....I appreciate the help so much...we've been agonizing about the driving. Renting with Dan Dooley...flying into Shannon and out of Cork. We would love to see Connemara area - we thought we'd stay in that area for about 4 nights and then the southwest for 4 nights. What would be two good base towns where we could walk to pubs in the evening and do day trips driving our car in the day. Thank you all so much. Yes, Kerry did not fly into the part of London we need to go, so we decided on Cork.

We've heard wonderful things about the Connemara area, but where would be a good place to stay that first day if coming from the Shannon Airport - also our first day driving? We don't mind heading a little north, and originally planned on flying into Knock, but ran into a problem, so are now flying into Shannon.

If you want the Connemara then you want to be flying into Knock (Ireland West) as this is on the north west edge of the Connemara then working your way down to Cork through Kerry.
Have night one in Westport which is an easy under an hour drive.
For the Connemara area south of Westport then use Clifden as a base for a couple of days.

You need to split the drive then in Ennis/Limerick/Adare before driving round Dingle to Killarney for 2 nights and end in Kinsale for the last night before departure.
