overall - at least Homer is wearing underwear.

Bilbo: Not sure why you think it's American taste. First, it seems to be targeted at the country in which it resides. Plus, if the Americans came up with the idea seems to me it was the Brits who agreed. Of course, I'm making the assumption whoever did it asked for permission and the landowner is a Brit.

For a very long time The Simpsons has provided the best satire of American life on television.

As to the Cerne giant, he has provided quite a few laughs over the centuries. To take this washable sketch too seriously seems bone-headed.

Yes, it's painted not cut into the chalk.
It will soon wash off.
Do you think that the story plus illustration has appeared in the American press?
Considering that the have banned a children's book about a visit to an art gallery, I hae ma doots.
One page had a tiny picture of a nude, shock horror ;-)

I thought it was quite funny, and it is in biodegradable paint, so won't be there long. I think possibly the "pagans" are taking things a little seriously (although given the average newspaper coverage they probably asked about 3 people - two who were known for extremist views).

If there was a serious side to the story, and if the Pagans really revere the Cerne Abbas giant, then I suppose It might be interesting to see how the Christians would react if Homer were painted next to a cathedral.

I think it's funny. It's not he first time something like this has been painted next to him. And unlike the Uffington White Horse he probably isn't so very old anyway - he isn't mentioned in the Doomsday book for instance. A theory has it that he was cut as a protest against Cromwell.

Yeah, I think it is pretty funny too. The fact that it is temporary makes a big difference.

"then I suppose It might be interesting to see how the Christians would react if Homer were painted next to a cathedral."

Willit - Christians have had numerous things done in the past. I don't think a temporary painting of Homer Simpson would bother anyone. Just think of the really mean spirited things that were done...(eg..crucifix upside down in a jar of urine in the name of art) among others. Homer Simpson would have been welcomed as opposed to that! :=)

maureencol - I was merely commenting that Pagans getting upset was not seen as any big deal, but had a giant Homer been painted next to a mosque or church then maybe the papers would have presented the "outraged worshippers" story a bit differently.

I am not overly defending pagans and their like. I went to Stonehenge one solstice morning , and was highly amused by different groups of "Druids" being insulting to each other about who were the real thing (Nobody knows - the druidic tradition was all oral, I don't think anything was written down).

<<had a giant Homer been painted next to a mosque or church then maybe the papers would have presented the "outraged worshippers" story a bit differently.>>

Ah, yes, and the numbers protesting would dictate some of that press - notwithstanding whether the protest view was shared by most believers.

Some people may be unaware that many church leaders in the US find Simpsons to be "religion-friendly" - it's one of the few shows where the family regularly goes to church together!

It might have been a hoot to turn a corner in the road and see Homer in his tighty whities sketched on the field. I have a photo of myself taken in Vienna in the late 80s, in front of a billboard depicting US Presidential candidate Michael Dukakis. I never did get a transalation of the message:
"Wo erfährt Mike Dukakis, ob er auf den Bush klopft?"

Nothing like a sprinkling of the contemporary with the antique - am always looking for those photo ops, like hi-tech scaffolding around an ancient building. Or HS challenging a mysterious Druid.

Piffle, they don't even know the significance of it, but like all of these crystal waving hippies will believe in anything and everything from runes to the zodiac to the I-Ching to tea leaves.
