the lost threads
I keep hoping the board will fix the problem of the recent months not being in the search function. The were seveal threads I had planned to print out before my Aug. trip but so far I still can't pull them up with the search function. Are we all having this problem? Any hope or info. that it might be fixed or are the postings of the last month or so just lost in cyberspace?

If you contributed to the threads you seek, you can find them by clicking on your name. The "screen name" tracking seems to be fully functional.
Failing that, use a few key words from the thread title in the search box. That seems to work more frequently than searching for content. Only use quotation marks if you want to find a specific string:
<b>paris hotels</b> will find any posts with those two words anywhere in them, such as <i>where in paris are inexpensive five-star hotels?</i>
<b>"paris hotels"</b> will only find such as <i>what paris hotels are clean?</i>

If you can by any chance remember the name of any regular poster who responded to the thread you're looking for, try finding any other current thread that contains that same person's name. Then, click on the name, and click on it again at the top of the left hand column when it appears. The older postings should come up. I know it ain't easy.

One of the threads had alot of info on Amsterdam restaurants - maybe from about two weeks ago - I think it talked about casual restaurants in the Canal zone, like some of the brown cafes. The other was info on what to do in the Montreux area in Switz. Various suggestions of day trips, maybe some restaurants. I tried searching with a few names or key words and haven't found them yet. Oh well - I'll just keep watching the board for new posts and trip reports - my trip isn't until near the end of August.

I'm finding the "screen name" tracking to be a bit ropey as well at the moment.
Often, I click on Where2Travel once and it lists the threads. Hoewever, it's often quite out-of-date (eg I know a thread has had more responses than shown). I click on Where2Travel again and get a different set of (usually, the correct up-to-date) responses.

For some months now I have had to click several times on my name to get the most updated screen. Refreshing is no more successful than clicking on my name. Annoying to say the least.
suec1, from my own sad experience, I strongly advise you to immediately save any thread you are interested in. You can email it to yourself using the link at the top or bottom of the thread. Or you can cut and paste it into a word doc. (I have one I call "fodors misc" which I dump things into until I have time to sort or print them.)
Never assume it will still be there later. Someone can hijack the thread and get it deleted, for one thing. The search function on here sucks, for another.

Thanks Rex - the A'dam thread is not the one I was looking for - those restaurants discussed there sound a bit too hip and fancy. The Switz thread is good, not the one I was looking for tho, it was more recent. But I'm printing out the Switz thread NOW! as who knows what I will be able to find or not find later!!! Live and learn - don't depend on finding threads later.

suec1: Perhaps this will help. If you search under "suze" (no quotes) and go to #145 "Zermatt or Montreux", you will find come suggestions. suze answers a lot of questions about Switzerland and there may be other info in some of her other threads.
Lucky you! I was there in March and just loved it. It must be glorious in the summer! I was only in Montreux for a few hours as I was staying in Lusanne so I don't have anything to pass on. Have a great time!

Just in case you are referring to my standard list of activities in Montreux, here it is --
Spend a morning walking along the 11km flowered lakeside promenade from Clarens to Villeneuve, passing the Chateau Chillon between Territet and Villeneuve; there are plenty of cafes to stop and have a coffee & snack along the way to replenish your strength. There are also plenty of benches to sit and read, watch other walkers, or simply stare at the majesty of the lake and the mountains in the distance.
If you make it all the way to Villeneueve, top off your long walk with a wonderful pizza & beer lunch at a lakeside café in Villeneuve, then take the ferry back to Montreux (I think the ferry stops in late Sep/Oct).
Spend a morning walking up to Montreux's old city and the old church for fantastic panoramic views from the church’s terrace. Have lunch at the Hotel/Restaurant du Pont at 12 rue du Pont (I had a ravioli in cream sauce with shaved truffles that was out of this world!). Montreux’s website is at www.montreux.ch
Spend the morning in Vevey hunting down the antiques shops in the old town. Then have lunch at the Hostellerie de Geneve on the Pl. Marche. Vevey’s website is at www.vevey.ch
Be sure to walk from Vevey to the town of La-Tour-de-Peilz, just a few blocks. Walk along the lake past stately trees and park benches until you come to an old fort, a small park, and the port. You'll see lots of folks out playing in good weather.
Take the train (the “wine train”) from Vevey to Chexbres, then spend a morning walking the vineyards down to the lake, hitting Rivaz & St. Saphorin. For lunch, find the Auberge du Rivaz (in Rivaz . . . ) with a terrace lake view or see if any of the cellars are having a cheese/wine tasting. Website: www.lavaux.ch/sentier2.htm
The lakeside village of Cully, just east of Lausanne, is a picturesque stop and has two recommended restaurants, the Auberge du Raisin and the Au Major Davel.
The lakeside village of Lutry, just two miles east of Lausanne, has a well-posted tour of medieval buildings as well as some good wine caves for tasting. Website: www. lutry.ch
Spend a day in the mountains, taking the train to the resort of Gstaad. On the way back, stop at Chateau d'Oex for lunch.
Take the funicular from Territet up to Glion and have lunch at the Hotel Victoria, enjoying its panoramic views of the lake.
Spend an afternoon in the medieval village of Gruyeres, making sure to sample the berries in creme-double. Website: www.gruyeres.ch
Spend an afternoon in Nyon at the Roman museum and the Caesar's columns nearby. The Fodors guide recommends a meal at the Auberge du Chateau just steps from the Roman museum. It was closed when I was there, but it looked charming. Website: www.nyon.ch
Go to the small, charming village of Celigny. Not much to see here but a picturesque place (it was actor Richard Burton’s home during the last years of his life). Have lunch at the Auberge du Soleil -- great prix fixe feast!

Morges has a cobbled main street that is lined with shops and patisseries; it has a flowered lakeside promenade that signs say runs all the way to Lausanne; and it has a large, green park next to the lake that is filled with stately trees.
